I have googled, but could find no information whether there are buses from Khon Kaen to Nakhorn Phanom (tried both Nakhorn and Nakhon). Are there any? Do they leave in regular intervals and how long is the travel time?

Yes there are some buses, but you have to "google" in Thai to find an answer about frequency... The frequency must be something like every hour ... to be confirmed . From Kalasin to Sakhorn Nakhon, the road is sceneric but the speed has to be accordingly ... So I will give an estimate of 5 hours for the travel time.

You were absolutely right and thanks again. I have done Ubon - Nakorn Phanom and Udorn Nakorn Phanom and had first thought of a joke when you said "scenic". (the routes I was used to take are very boring) But as it was, I had my stomach up my throat half the time... Shall be back by car.
