A survey conducted by internet provider Dtac showed that more than 50 per cent of young netizens bullied others in relation to their appearance, gender and points of view, Onuma Rerkpattanapipat, head of Dtac’s communications and sustainability division, said.

Total Access Communication (Dtac) collaborated with media analyser Wisesight to study messages posted on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter between 2018 and 2019.

The collaboration found that some 700,000 or 39 messages per minute were related to bullying or discrimination and multiplied to around 20 million through sharing or retweeting.

Of the messages, 36.4 per cent were related to people’s appearance, 31.8 per cent to gender, 10.2 per cent to point of view, and the rest to nationality, religion, characteristics, tastes, financial status and family background.

The study also showed that most of the bullies were students, ranging from kindergarten to high school, and many were also friends.

In response to this study, Dtac launched a campaign called “Why We Bully”, in which netizens will be taught about the problem and how they can deal with it.

Dtac is also collaborating with Plan International Thailand, an international organisation for children, to develop a method of teaching people about gender diversity to stop cyberbullying.
