They have flattened the curve down to a very low stable number of cases,

That WAS the case .. but now it’s on the up again in Europe and Australia and the reason is that as they gradually relax the restrictions the number of cases goes up. If Thailand’s Covid statistics at true to date then I would understand completely why they do not want outsiders to come and mess that up. It’s a difficult decision especially when the Thai people who are presumably not relying on Tourism for income do not want to allow foreigners to return .

Worse is to come especially if the Government do not extend the visa situation come August / September 1,000s of Foreigners will be heading back home there is an estimated 3 to 400,000 stuck here just think about the loss of income if they all pack there bags and clear off . I’m okay but my wife is stuck in the U.K. if things dont improve I to will be departing for at least a year until everything quietens down and the restrictions are removed I have already got someone in mind to live in my property and I’ll head to The Canary Islands and meet up with my wife. I will see how the next three months go but if I’m honest I cannot see it improving ☹️☹️

Won't miss anyone who has to leave for visa issues.

However, tourism and his income is despetately needed by millions of locals.

Couldn’t the cancellations be tourists from out with Thailand who now realise because of the restrictions Thailand has put in place they can’t come now. People tend to book months in advance when booking holidays and I can envisage cancellations month on month until the restrictions are eased or removed.

I live in Rayong also, between Laem Mai Phim and Ban Phe, last weekend both places were packed went through today like a ghost town, my wife is also very paranoid about it.

Many have cancelled bookings not because the one idiot special guy from military dictatorship of Egypt. They have cancelled because they know how incompetent and hystherical Thai government and city governments are reacting. There is no confidence in rules. They apply and yet they not. Changing all the time. Confidence to be restored? By issuing new rules on hourly basis? Who the hell will spend big money buy flights and plan holidays when one corona idiot can cause  government to overreact, put the city under lockdown and so on.

U want confidence? First step is to formulate some rules, what happens when, etc.. and then stick to it. So everyone knows what and when and if...

And military dictator Prayut should make sure that his best dictator friends and their personnel get tested. And by the way, if that was an official visit, why were children/families accompanying those very important idiots?

Will you look at level we are at?  The country has passed the test and it has given proof it can be turned on and off like a spigot. It qualifies for the next round!

It has long since become comical. I would put the beginning on the day the Health Minister was handing out masks in Bangkok (can't remember the month) and threatened to boot out any foreigners that wouldn't accept them.

handing out masks is comical? expecting that foreign guests should comply with Thai laws and Thai regulations is comical?

It more sounds very responsible to me. THANK GOD we dont have a Clown here like in the us. Things would be pretty bad...

The way cases are counted varies by country, for example infection models exist whereas 1 person suspected of infection together with like the R number and risk of infection are calculated as infections, or deaths are recorded as covid 19 without being even tested then the same multiplyer is applied ... These numbers have been massively manipulated for financial gain to said hospital or care home to secure government funding etc... hence they have been caught out with this, just look at the uk requesting an urgent review or America check out infowars.com ....  The death rate in the uk as I stated 4 months ago will not deviate from the numbers released by the ONS for the last 5 years in the uk, in fact the death rate is lower.   This virus is a hoax and is nothing more than the flu with a fancy media branded name... and Thailand took the bait, hook line and sinker...

Takes over an hour to drive from one place to the other.

So, did the Covid 19 take a bus to Pattaya, stay a few nights, and do some shopping.

Every town or city within 60 minutes drive of Pattaya could say the same thing. ????

Nonsense.

Remember they are domestic Thai tourists. We have to forget logic ????

I left Thailand in February after a decade of living mainly in the Kingdom; I left with the notion that I would return asap but that thought has slowly declined, not because of it being unrealistic but because I don't want to. I would rather be living somewhere that is trying to maintain normality yet which has measures in place to prevent the spread of the virus. If more people lose their jobs and livelihoods in LOS, and things start to become more pricy due to inflation later down the line, things will get really ugly really fast. Not to mention the political unrest simmering under the surface

Thailand has probably been one of the best places to see out this Covid Pandemic.   But for a few blips in logical thinking, the Thai government has been  sensible in its measures and pragmatic in their enforcement.  When I see the shambles going in in the UK, I thank goodness that I am here.

absolutely, the government clearly feel the loss of 20% of their GDP is a price worth paying for keeping thai people safe and protecting their health service. for thailand it is a binary decision, compared to other countries who are moving forward, risk assessing and slowly opening up in a controlled way.  which way will prove the most effective in protecting, restarting and maintaining economic growth only time will tell.

I left in March, and lost my remaining feeling for Thailand since. Tired with the game, the system, the hysteria. But on the other hand, I notice the THB losing value, and if this hysteria continues, I think the forex reserves of Thailand will dwindle and there will be no tourists, hence the THB slide will accelerate together with the non-performing loans. Already my wife is pointing to 'cheap houses' in Bangkok (shudder), but if the THB really plummets for more, then perhaps we should stay there for some time. Nevertheless, we decided to sell both of our condos in Bkk. About the unrest you mention, yeah, that comes together with the inflation. Btw, I always admired your choice of women (avatar pic) ????

Yes the U.K. was a shambles but if don’t test you don’t get cases simple as, how many tests have Thailand carried out some thing they never mention. T

Yeah the veneer has sort of disappeared. I had a great 10 years in and around Thailand, but the negatives are a lot more apparent upon leaving for an extended period of time. Things have changed quite a lot in a decade there too, for the worse.
If a country can properly track, trace and test then it can limit the R number down to below 1. It has been shown globally, so either Thailand is incapable of doing that, or there is another reason why they are overreacting.

It doesn't really matter what the reality of the situation is because you are dealing with what peoples perceptions are and the two are often in contradiction with one another. It's the way the brain works. Fight or fright! When faced with a situation like this it kicks in with fright and there is nothing you can really do to reverse that. It just takes time to restore confidence.

Well fright has been given a hand by the press and government.  It’s hard to believe people were so terrified by the Egyptian fellow and the 9 year old kid.

That is true, they don't know how many have it, but nobody seems to be testing everyone, so we really don't have a full enough picture anywhere.  Anecdotally, Thailand has been both lucky in avoiding the worst of it, and quick to impose sensible measures when they were needed, but not for too long, hence the pragmatic bit.  Altogether, I think that the government have done a reasonable job in difficult circumstances.  The one vital area where they have not done at all well, or even tried very hard, and where they can and should be heavily criticised, is not using the considerable currency and gold reserves they have squirrelled away, to protect the poor, the destitute  and the unemployed. That has been shameful and still is.

Ignorance seems to be bliss for most of the World, as no one country has 100% tested its population.  So we are all ignorant of the extent of this virus, its real impacts and its longevity.  Thailand is no different.

You think that'll be as soon as a year?

IMHO it'll be at least 2 years before flight prices become frequent or affordable.

And I suspect the $100,000 insurance will be permanent.

IMO 2 scenarios:

1/ either the whole thing goes away quite soon and it becomes just like the flu ( authorities apologise for trying to destroy world economy by over reacting ) and things go back ( sort of ) to what it was like before.

2/ it carries on indefinitely more or less like now, varying between lockdown and sort of lockdown, economies founder, depression ensues, we are all screwed.

I'm not convinced that a magic vaccine is just around the corner, and will save all 8+ ( and increasing ) billion of us.

Only time will tell if either scenario is correct. I certainly won't be taking any vaccine that comes out in less than 18 months ( to allow time for proper testing etc ), and even then it's going to take a very long time for everyone to get it.

2 points. If someone doesn't know they have the Corona till a test tells them they do it can't be affecting them very much, if at all, which casts doubt the "killer virus" scenario.

It's called capitalism. If anyone wants Thailand to become socialist, they should start a new political party, win the election, and change the entire political ethos.

That way, Thailand becomes just like the west and descends into a permanent chaos where PC reigns supreme, children have no idea of what gender they are, people protest about things they know nothing about, mind altering drugs become the norm, and millions prefer hand outs to working for a living.

Don't know about your government, but some have done little else, since the thing began in March, than scare people that if they don't "comply" with what the bureaucrats want we are all going to die a horrible death.

If I believed what other people tell me without any critical thinking, just reading the threads on TVF would scare me silly. I'd be wearing a gas mask outside, and hiding in my room most of the time with the windows boarded up for fear of a virus getting in.

Only "News" is that the % is only 30. Seems unbelievably LOW.

30% out of the current occupancy rate, which was most likely already 10%, so they must be down to 7%, all because the Egyptian dared to potentially infect most of the covid free Thais in the province.
