Police and local officials were called to beach road in north Pattaya around 4.30 pm yesterday after a man with a knife threatened to slash his own neck.

There was a large crowd of bystanders including locals and tourists.

More than ten officials tried to calm him down for an hour until the decision was made to charge at him and disarm him.

Bunsaeng or "Saeng", 35, was treated for injuries at the scene by rescue personnel before being taken to hospital when he was guarded to prevent a recurrence.

Locals told Siam Chon News that earlier he had grabbed a female som tam (papaya salad) traders' knife.

The reason for the incident is unclear.

So far Saeng had just been blathering incoherently.

I think it´s totally unfair to take away a persons right to decide over his own life and death. What they can do, is of course to charge him for theft of a som tam seller knife.

I'm more for it when ones life is close to an end, or is in severe pain that can't be solved. I think when it comes to mental illness though, there is a chance of being saved.

I've put on my Thailand CIS hat and figured out the probable reason. He realizes that there is a good chance that his career of making a lot of money as a sign painter is over...
