An army spokesman patted the country's military on the back for a job well done following the annual recruitment drive from July 23rd to August 9th.

In addition to record numbers all the Covid-19 measures were well followed causing no problems, said Sirijan Ngathong.

New recruits will report to their bases between September 1st and 3rd.

It was a better year than last with 41,406 volunteers.

Changes in the regulations resulted in a 44.72% increase from last year.

Those who did not show up according to summonses will be traced and asked to explain themselves.

Prosecutions could follow.

All they have to say is that they suspected they had Covid-19, and did not want to jeopardise the impeccable "Thailand is free of Covid" reputation, therefore knocking it off top spot of:

Thailand ranked world's safest tourist destination amid Covid-19

Shocking.

shocking Not, for a military junta government it's (or was) expected, everybody/everyone wants a piece of the cake regardless the size of the piece and/or the rank, there's always a freebee somewhere

Just how big is a general's garden,

That's a highly sensitive national secret on par with how do they acquire 600 million baht

( from their rich wife's and dead friends ???? )

On the same level as another national secret: How much wood would a woodpecker peck if a woodpecker could peck wood?

conscripts = volunteers ? in what world ?

I think you may be wrong, I can understand how lots of guys would volunteer, just for the food and lodgings, in the current economic climate

Anyone know how much these volunteer squaddies get paid ?

7'500 a month intially which can then rise (marginally) depending on if they learn a specialism - engineer, rader ops etc and then later on promotions.

I believe that if they "volunteer"  instead of  picking the wrong colour ticket  they have to serve less time.

The term is translated from Thai. Volunteer in this case means they did not choose to deal with the "lottery" and instead asked to join. People that picked the red card are not called volunteers.
