Phuket announces ‘5T’ model for receiving tourists, includes mandatory US$100k health insurance

I have no idea whether tourist will subject themselves to these requirements. Perhaps “tourists” who are not “tourists”, But people who live here using tourist status will do so.

if proper tourists do in fact arrive, a couple of obvious concerns:

1. Will the a Thai authorities actually do what they are supposed to do, beyond the first week of operation. These things tend to fade out pretty quickly.

2. Will tourists really observe 14 days of quarantine? It seems doubtful to be honest, and then what about hotel workers who come into contact with tourists quarantined in the hotel. Are those workers also subject to quarantine?

on the whole, trying to open Thailand to tourists seems a bit like pushing water uphill atm. It might be better to just write off the season like Bali has done, rather than keep a drip feed of unfounded hope keep percolating.

but if tourists don’t come, it’s all moot anyway.

I can see a million arrivals in October, two million in November and three in December... at least...

Seriously, this is an opportunity that is going to be used by two groups of foreigners, and only them:

- those who have been waiting to come back to Thailand, where they usually reside

- retirees and other non working people with time and money on their hands, looking to escape from the winter and a possible second wave of the virus in their own countries

Altogether, we are talking about a few thousands people.

a lot of money because of the stupid blackmail 5 stars hotel to stay and paid for 2 weeks. Why not a cheaper hotel or directly at my home ?

There is one other added difficulty, finding the insurance company who will supply the Covid19 cover !! Very seriously few and far between.

That's actually the EASY bit, at least for we Brits, and probably other nationalities too

It seems more and more evident to me that Thailand, and this Military government in particular, have a long term plan to destroy, or at least severely limit the tourist industry and reduce it to a minor role in the economy.  Tourism is around  some 18% of GDP, so not a huge hit if they eliminate most of it.  They probably see this as a way to shut out foreigners altogether as a first step, then eventually refuse retiring expats as step 2. Covid has provided the excuse and the means to achieve a much longer aim.

Losing that % of GDP alongside all the infrastructure built over decades to support it is not minor, especially when other aspects of the economy are faltering too. Tourism suits a country with poor levels of education (see PISA educational tables) and modern skills . They  have neither the wherewithal nor vision to address those fundamental drawbacks to replace that huge loss which would take a generation to improve. Thailand will watch its neighbours progress and expand at its expense until possibly the economic ramifications on poor folk spill over into political unrest. The outlook is not rosy.

Total nonsense. The $100 billion (yes, about 3.3 trillion baht!) Thailand takes in from tourism annually reverberates out in countless ways. Even the rural folks benefit. Alot of the nicer houses in the poorer farming areas were built with money from expats. Alot of trucks, cars and income is from expats. Countless business employing many. To say it is insignificant, is a blatant misunderstanding of Thai economics. Thousands of hotels, restaurants, countless airlines and many tour companies, also benefit.

This hapless administration needs to develop some courage and initiative. They can't hide from the world forever. Extreme timidity from supposedly tough men is an amusing thing to witness. However, the pain they are inflicting on millions is not.

All people from all nations should be welcome starting tomorrow. If you are willing to endure quarantine, no restrictions whatsoever. No begging of a consulate for permission to visit. That is nonsensical stupidity. Are we dogs, or are we people?

And when those people who are welcomed with open arms start to introduce covid cases potentially causing ALL aspects of the Thai economy to close down, what then?

whats required is not fools courage, nor misguided initiative, what’s required is detailed data on the risks involved in allowing tourists in to the country and rigorous implementation of mitigation and monitoring processes.

Whilst no fan of the current government, it seems this is pretty much what they have done. The question mark is over the implementation bit.

46 consonants - of which two are erroneously listed as 'not used' but which in reality can be.

All down to the inventor of the Thai typewriter Edwin McFarland/Hunter who is responsible for deliberately not including the two on the keyboard.

To my knowledge 44 consonants which includes obsolete and http://www.thai-language.com/ref/consonants

+ the vowels

In NZ it’s pretty much impossible to buy health travel insurance to cover Covid-19, and not possible to book any flights to thailand. So looks like I’m stuck here for now! 555

14 days quarantine at resort, OK ....... but make all food/drink/alcohol inclusive in the holiday price (no extortion).

For Greece, only positive are on quarantine. At the expense of greek government. You don't have to pay for the hotel

Vice Governor Phichet explained that tourists wanting to come to Phuket must be approved by a Royal Thai Embassy and have evidence of COVID-19 test proving they are COVID-free within 72 hours before departing. Alternatively, they must present a ‘Fit to Fly’ or other documents proving they are free of infection.

So, including the insurance, the requirements are just the same as the other 'allowed groups' - they can't make that work so there's no chance of this working either.  I don't see anything about the flights yet but expect a requirement for using repat flights - not a hope!

Better they just shut up and stop all this <deleted> until they are ready to fully open again.

Maddness, they should have wrapped this up with tour operators, i.e. Thai's Royal Orchid holidays to provide a package that included everything including flights, hotels, tests and visa fast track.

This is now no different from the asq methodology.

well, in fairness, they have no choice. its either 2 weeks fully segregated quarantine for all, no exceptions, or acceptance of covid outbreaks in the general populace.

fluffy measures like 1km radius or shared hotel areas will just lead to the latter.

decisions need to be made AND stuck too, someone is going to feel the pain whichever way they choose but better that than everybody suffering

  • Hosting and accommodation is provided for free to quarantined/ self-isolated people.
  • Moreover, free medical care is provided to those who need to be quarantined hospitalized or treated in medical establishments.

Forget it, treating tourists like criminals. The days of jumping on a plane and getting a 30 day stamp are over, that's what I liked doing. It's not worth the hassle unless they make things easier.

Are you asking from a Thai or normal thinking persons perspective? You might have also given the option of "Dirty" Dog????

and not specifically Covid...;

I looked at this insurance. It was 850 baht for 1m baht insurance for Covid-19 only.

Not available to foreign tourists, that do not have a work permit or have not been in thailand for 6 months.

So, unfortunately this insurance won’t be any good for the average traveller.
