Leading doctor says Thailand shouldn’t open to tourists for another six months

Worldwide it's actually increasing. Interesting was that an American university used AI to look at thousands of symptoms of different patients and to investigate why some seem to die or suffer for months. AI came up with a reason, it causes Bradykinin, a  human peptide to go out of control. Coronavirus seems to be pushing bradykinin into overdrive, Bradykinin normally helps to control blood pressure it can be treated with 5 or 6 drugs already on the market (some of which are already being used by doctors) This won't stop you getting Covid but will prevent you dying of it or suffering for months.

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2253987-we-are-finally-unravelling-the-mystery-of-what-causes-severe-covid-19/

At least one person quoting from a reliable, verifiable source - thank you! ????

Thing about NS, is they're not afraid to say "could be" or "would be" or "might" when they don't actually know, and state facts when they do.

Also, put Bradykinin into a search engine and you'll see what I mean!

I don’t have to stay at home because I’m living in Thailand where we don’t let western idiots in. Duh.

Is that the royal "we", perchance? ????

In reference to migrant labor he suggested that many of those jobs could be done by Thais for now.

why now, but not before? with the exception of english and some foreign languages teachers,  thai people could have done "those jobs" before covid-19!

I would suggest he should isolate himself for the rest of his life to make sure he will not be infected by this - or another virus.

There are 100's of probably down to earth scientist, with a healthy self esteem who do not need to promote themselves who are of a total different opinion.

Common sense, a healthy distance and regular hand hygiene will make it difficult - if not impossible - to get this flue virus.

Don't listen to one wannabe only.

Open the borders today, six months from now or 2 years from now.  The virus is still out in the world waiting to enter the kingdom and will eventually enter to run the natural course of every pandemic since beginning of time.

And there will be no effective vaccine.  They will tell you there is, billions $ will be paid by every country in the world.  But truth is it will not be a vaccine but a hope and a prayer.

On the positive side if I am wrong and an effective vaccine is developed:  We will also have cure for common cold virus, influenza virus and aids virus because they will have learned over last few months to do what was impossible for last 50 years..

This comment wins the internet today... Well said. All this turmoil for an illness that has killed a mere 0.0008% of the population. 58 deaths in a population of 70,000,000, do the math.

deja vu

pops up in my mind

Leading doctor , warning ..

repeat a lie over and over again and people will believe it

As  always say, in all times, there are stupid or in other ways disturbed people, that is and was normal all the time.

The question should be: What are the special circumstances (call it "system", distribution of power, or whatever) that these people are presented in the media as as experts, or at the helm of the governments. People like this doctor do not have the power to decide, when they want to spread their arguments in the media.

There are many other experts, with different opinions, but you do not get the chance to read their opinions in the media.

why ?

He was clearly suggesting that business interests were being put above public health concerns in the push to reopen the country  ....

always and from the beginning of this "pandemic" script, we are told this stupid argument. health and economy ( business interests is just a reframing trick o make it look bad) are not in general at opposites sides of the scale. IN fact, in the middle  there is health  improvement  connected to growing income in a society. It is a well known fundamental knowledge, that a big recession has effects of declining health.

Just in the past days, there was an article about huge surge of suicide (20 %) in Thailand. in the last 6 month. This would be up to 2000 more suicides in one year. This is just one example . And  what about the immense stress, fear, anxiety, for the 6 million people who lost their jobs? and their - lets say 10 millions relatives? it is well known for   "experts" that  all this leads to a decline in body´s defences and in consequence  to more diseases.

This "expert" does not know these correlations ?

clown!

He and this yellow tainted Dr. Yong of the same ultra conservative Chulalongkorn University quite obviously seem to be on the payroll of this xenophobic government, paid to promote its political agenda. Keep foreign observers out of the country while they change the political system. Ruin the economy to make its remains a bargain for Chinese investors.

Conspiracy? Maybe. Possible. But these "experts" argue so differently to almost all other well reputable international experts, that any other conclusion is hardly possible.

I'm also against opening a country for tourism as of now. Thailand will become just like US and EU, then we have to go through total lock-down all over again. Government has already warned that they will do so if infections become uncontrollable. Not only the tourism in Thailand but all over the world, especially the small businesses, they just have to bear the unbearable.

Government employed ?

Thailand is being incredibly weak and media driven about Covid-19. They prefer to destroy their economy and sink into national poverty just because a few thousand old, fat and very ill people will die. This is ignoring the vast majority who will not be affected much. Totally out of proportion. Government by media. Such a shameful shambles.

I agree with you, but must correct you also. There will not be thousands of old, fat and very ill people who will die. By far not. This only was the case 6 months ago, in severely hit countries like Italy.

But today, the medics know much better now to treat severe cases, or how to even avoid severe cases to occur. Today they use Remdesivir, they look not only to the lung anymore, they use blood thinners to avoid thrombosis and stroke, etc.

Look to Italy! The deaths went down from a thousand a day to single digit numbers today only. It would not be different in Thailand. To the contrary, if they would start to test more (why do they refuse this, by the way?), they very very likely would find numerous local cases, possibly more than in Italy. But they don't want. For political reasons. It's obvious!

The fallout of Covid is far worse than the disease itself, almost 500 more suicides more this year and counting, that's almost 10 times more than the death toll so far from Covid 19.

Pathetic to see such a liar and fearmonger.

A researcher ? Seriously ? How inacurate is he.

Stay close mean not just loss for big business but for entire country.

All tourism sector, small, medium, big, not just big.

So all related tax income too

All small and medium Thaïs people who used to benefit from foreigners

Including condo owners etc.

Psychological dramas : families separated for very long times.

And 6 months like i knows exactly the time (for a vaccine being applied and mandatory i guess).

Pathetic. Wonder what's his personal agenda / interest.

You're aware of the dangers of exponential growth?

Actually more and more young people are being incapacitated by it. After recovery some have a fibrosis like scarring of the lungs which may never go away causing tiredness and confusion. You don't have to be fat and old (although that helps) to get severe covid, it's all a matter of genetics. Thailand has been relatively lucky, the numbers of infected aren't huge, covid doesn't like hot weather apparently, let's wait and see what happens when the cold season arrives. I can well imagine that the health service here would be quickly overwhelmed and then the blame game will start.

I can't imagine that the government these days is keen on impoverishing the country, there are already demonstrations from (mostly) students challenging the status quo in society, it won't take much to get the impoverished to join in, the last thing the government wants, it may not survive this as it is.

To the majority of posters you do understand that this man is a doctor, his job is to comment on the health issues. It is up to other people to discuss economic impacts.

it is also fun to see how many armchair experts there are at home who barely passes high school science but are suddenly world wide experts on infectious diseases. You has better hope that a second wave does not hit Thailand as due to the aged the average TV user there would suddenly be half as many commentators

Pointless comment.  This guy has a job.  It is those rendered unemployed by Covid who cannot pay for food, mortgages, other domestic loans, meds for the elderly, costs associated with school for the kids etc.

Another rich <deleted>, sitting in his office on a nice salary.

It is not about big businesses making money, it's about getting millions of normal Thais out of poverty, and able to put food on the table for their families.

Stop the infected migrant slave labour coming in and give the tour guides a shovel.. end of problem.

No more unemployment, no infections from overseas..

Poor Thais will get handouts from the government pretty soon. Only small money, but better than nothing.
