A party celebrating the retirement of an irrigation official in Songkhla’s Hat Yai district turned into a tragedy when a guest was shot dead in the early hours of Friday (September 25).

Police arrived at the crime scene at around 4am to find the body of Anukul Petchthong, 48, and an inebriated Sa-ngad Ninsuwan, 53, who worked with him, sitting nearby.

Six employees of the Office of Regional Irrigation 6 were the remaining guests at the party after more than 50 others left before the shooting took place.

Sa-ngad was taken to Hat Yai Police Station and reportedly confessed that he had been angered by Ankul punching him in the face for being drunk.

He said he then returned home to grab a gun and returned to shoot Anukul. He said they had no personal conflict, but he could not control himself.

Police have charged him with murder, possessing a weapon and carrying a weapon in a public place without permission.

I've always wondered...

Do criminal Thais actually say those exact words (in Thai) after being arrested? -- "I could not control myself."  Given that I've seen that phrase reported over and over again, more times than I could possibly count.

Or, is that familiar phrase just the Thai police's way of explaining the otherwise un-explainable, regardless of what the actual arrestee has said?

I guess that it's the Thai equivalent is what we would know as a 'crime of passion', which is defined as an impulsive act rather than a premeditated one. there are actually more of the former than the latter in most societies.

It's why the police always suspect friends or relatives in the first instance, unless there is compelling evidence to the contrary.

Pet peeve of mine, because I like Songkhla Town so much as a weekend getaway from BKK.

I wish they'd say that it happened in Hat Yai in the headline.  Yeah, I know, Hat Yai is in Songkhla Province, but it's an hour's drive from Songkhla, the pleasant beach town.  This is like claiming a terrorist bombing in New York, when it happened in Buffalo, New York.

You'd think going home then coming back would leave you enough time to jai yen yen the <deleted> down and realize that a bruise to your ego isn't worth someone's life.

This is why he needs to be destroyed like a rabid dog.

HatYai town is 30 km away from Songkhla .... to be more precise, 15 min drive from KoYo intersection up until the floating market entrance, just before BigC extra intersection
