Protesters scuffle with police at London anti-lockdown demo

Thousands of protesters gathered in Trafalgar Square in central London on Saturday (September 26) to protest against the British government's recently toughened COVID-19 restrictions.

LONDON (Reuters) - Protesters at a central London anti-lockdown rally scuffled with police officers on Saturday who were trying to break up the demonstration because of a lack of social distancing.

Police said nine officers had been injured and 16 people arrested for offences including assaulting an officer and violent disorder, in the second weekend of trouble at a demonstration against pandemic restrictions.

Chanting "Freedom" and carrying banners saying "We Do Not Consent" and "COVID 1984", thousands of people had crammed into Trafalgar Square to protest. Several told broadcasters they believed the pandemic was a hoax created by governments to control people.

The police ordered the protest to disperse because demonstrators had failed to socially distance or wear masks, meaning it was no longer exempt from national rules that limit gatherings to six people.

Video footage showed officers briefly using batons to drive the protesters back.

"I am very frustrated to see that nine officers were injured during clashes with a small minority of protesters," said Commander Ade Adelekan.

"This is especially saddening in light of the injuries sustained by officers last weekend. We will be supporting those officers who were injured and I wish them a very speedy recovery."

Saturday's demonstration followed a similar event last weekend when 32 people were arrested.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson tightened COVID-19 restrictions this week, telling people to work from home if possible and ordering pubs and restaurants to close early after cases started to rise again.

The United Kingdom recorded 6,042 new cases of COVID-19, official figures showed on Saturday, and 34 new deaths among those who tested positive for the virus within 28 days.

Should it be let to follow its course with stats like these?

Total cases - 32.6M

Recovered - 22.5M
Deaths - 990K

It would be ridiculous to suggest that those numbers can be projected in a straight line into the future.  That would represent the ultimate simplistic model.  As with climate change, too many working parts in play.  To assume you've accounted for them all would be utter folly and hubris.  An obvious lack of faith in mankind and his potentials on display, let alone understanding.

Nobody projected those data in a straight line.

ravip is not suggesting disaster with his statement, supported by the numbers he provided which he's obviously using to project outward in an unchanging manner?  You're simply attempting refutation via the tactic of using a technicality.  Lame.

The ‘technicality’ is the fact that nobody in this discussion has made the projection you have asserted.

I did. The real projection is that deaths would increase exponentially not linearly.

Loons.

Loons become patriots in time. Patriots become rebels in time. Rebels become loons in time.

Loons become politicians in time.

Correct. with a little knowledge of trends and maths, its clear that these figures would ramp up exponentially, as the did before restrictions were put into place and as they are now in the US. And he wants 4 more years? You're avin' a giraffe.

The same trends and maths used early to predict Covid mortality rates which were astronomically wrong?  Statistics and maths alone are capable of accurately predicting human activity?  My opinion is that you're avin' a fantasy.

Follow simple, basic precautions?  Is that all?  So simple?  Why don't you mention the pain, suffering and death resulting from your basic precautions?  Businesses lost, loss of income and savings, unemployment, economic devastation, rise in suicides, depression, etc.

Is it you who selfishly ignores the negative consequences from your simple, basic precautions?

You've been drinking too much orange Koolade. The deaths you are quoting pale into insignificance when compared to the deaths from Covid.

I didn't post any figures on deaths due to lock downs.  As to your claim it may as well be a fart in the wind, e.g. totally useless.  You provide zero evidence.
