(Reuters) - The British government is planning to enforce a total social lockdown across a majority of northern Britain and potentially London, to combat a second wave of COVID-19, The Times reported late on Sunday.

Under the new lockdown measures being considered, all pubs, restaurants and bars would be ordered to shut for two weeks initially, the report said.

Earlier this week, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said any new national lockdown would threaten jobs, livelihoods and human contact.

The report added that households would also be banned indefinitely from meeting each other in any indoor location where they were not already under the order.

Britain had last week imposed new measures that required people to work from home where possible and had ordered restaurants and bars to close early to tackle a fast-spreading second wave of COVID-19, with new restrictions lasting probably six months.

Schools and shops be allowed to remain open, along with factories and offices at which staff could not work from home, the Times added, citing a senior government source.

Victoria, Australia prohibitive lockdown measures have been tested and are successful.  Now coming to northern Britain and possibly London.  Will the Brits fare better than the Aussies?

Hats off to Boris and the Tory government for the professional way they have handled this epidemic at every stage from ensuring no shortages of PPE, care homes fully protected and a world beating test, track and trace system to control the spread of the virus.....no other government in the world could even come close.

I have no doubt the EU FTA will have been handled in the same manner.

???? Brilliant!

When all this nonsense is over, the courts are going to be so filled for the next 10 years with ppi-like Covid claims that the whole legal system will crash, the government will be broke and 75% of all care homes closed due to bankruptcy

Very easy to blame the Government but ultimately its the general public who should take most of the blame.

Yes...agree.....all those old people clogging up the NHS...... demanding to be returned to their care homes without even asking for a covid test.....they deserved to die.

There is some truth in that, but it is 90% govt policy that is at fault. Current second wave was entirely avoidable, but business pressures from pubs and universities especially made things a lot worse than they should have been

No!

It's the government inability to tackle this pandemic. A poor communication, irratic changes of handling, poor Management.

The trust in this so called government is gone.

It's similar to Donald's, but not America first but Boris friends first.

It's time Starmer will have the say.

There have been multiple news reports recently criticising the different approaches taken to COVID restrictions by Westminster and the devolved governments, suggesting that this was creating a confusing picture. It is weak and lazy reporting such as this which is creating confusion.

Northern Britain means the north part of Scotland, where Johnson's government has no say in COVID response. Any changes to restrictions would be devised and announced by the Scottish government, not the British government. I suspect that the author means Northern England, where Johnson has authority to mandate a response.

Possibly the confusion arose because the Times is outsourcing their journalism to India.

My first thought.

You didn't understand the perspective?    If deaths by stroke are greater than deaths by Covid by a magnitude of almost 6 then what relevance does contagion have to do with it?

Through poor life style or misfortune (poor genes) you have a "stroke" end of.........walk about with a contagious disease and you could be killing totally innocent people......see the perspective?

Overwhelmingly, landslided, elected by the British people...

On the other hand: did other European nations did better ? ( aside of the neglectance + happy handshake program of Boris in the beginning )

Far too early to make comparisons.......nations gloating over reverse Olympic league tables...very poor show what?.....unless of course any such comparisons are favorable...then its a different story such as.....number of tests...testing capacity....race for a vaccine????

In what way has the communication been poor ? Granted the Government has changed tactics but they've always been upfront and informative.

Walking in my local supermarket the other day and a good amount of people not social distancing or wearing masks. What part of it do they not understand !?

Whilst I acknowledge the Government hasn't always got it right, this is a once in a generation event for which none of us were prepared for.

I wish people would stop bashing the Government and take accountibility for their own actions.

That would be the usual way a totally useless government excuses itself from its blundering and incompetence. Not our fault guvnor, its all your fault is their mantra.

Remember, the chief advisor to Boris suggested that a 60 mile drive to a beauty spot (which happens to have large GSK offices) is OK to test ones eyesight for a (illegal) 240 mile journey. But it wasn't his fault, it was the rest of the public for not following the rules.

One swallow does not make a summer.

I don't blame the GP, we're all tired of Covid but if we keep breaking the rules then its just going to go on for longer and probably with more lockdowns in place.

I'd say its 10% Government, 90% GP but each to their own.

We had to get businesses and schools back open, it was bankrupting an already bankrupt economy. There is no easy answer to this other than total lockdown for a extended amount of time. Do we really want another run on toilet paper!!
