Tearful relatives of a famous Thai boxer came to a hospital to receive his body and take him back to his hometown in Roi-Et in the north east of Thailand.

Jamnian Moonkasen, 52, - better known by his ring name of "Dok Mai Pa P. Phongsawang" had been bitten by a centipede known as "takhap" in Thai.

The wound from the bite got infected and this led to a blood infection that killed him.

At the hospital on Wednesday were sad boxing fans and the boxer's grieving daughters Wiphaporn, 27, and Jaruwan, 22, as well as his old brother Detduang, 57, also a famous Thai boxer.

Detduang said that his brother had been in great health before he was admitted to hospital. He told him he thought he had been bitten by a centipede but after that he didn't do anything about it for many days.

Complications from diabetes compounded the problems, he said.

I always thought that a immediate hospital visit was essential after being bitten by one of those things. R.I.P.

Maybe for most of us, but this guy was obviously very hard and thought that things would be ok if he could deal with the pain... looks like the diabetes was a part of the cause which delayed any potential recovery.

I wouldn't be surprised if many people out of town get bitten by these little buggers and don't seek medical care, but survive.

My wife saw it on TV. The man said he didn't know what stung him and so wait five days before going to a hospital!

Moreover, they said that when it goes as far as the death it would be due to the onset of a severe allergy and not to the venom itself.

I have some of those beast in my garden I never handle any more dead leaves, for example, without garden leather gloves.

Been bitten twice. Very painful. No hospital just keep clean.

I've seen centipedes around my yard, but this one looks a bit more scary.

You have probably not seen centipedes, but millipedes.  Look at the picture below.

Centipedes are far more dangerous usually.

You surmise correctly.

The world makes more sense now....I recall once getting down very close to one of those critters on the left.  I tried to count the legs. Wayyyy more than 100.
