The emergency decree is not what they're protesting about Prayuth.....they want you and your military buddies back into the barracks....and reforms!

  • I wonder what the catch is, there's always a catch.

  • They were 100% army in yellow shirts last night at govt house, the rest are civil servants made to turn out and a few old brainwashed die hards. Very few of the former middle class yellows for reasons

  • Well for once Prayut has done something sensible, had he left the emergency measures in place, it would have lead to major unrest and probably violence.

The protesters gave Prayut 3 days to resign or face more protests on Saturday. So no protests today or tomorrow planned. Quite a few videos on Twitter showing the yellow shirts who were quite clearly either police or army in yellow polo shirts.

The catch is: Prayut not stepping down, I believe.

He needs to, the country has to move forward and when mass tourism returns it will be nothing like before.

Has to save face by claiming the situation was violent before and now has settled.... when in fact it just got worse by doing it.....

Means absolutely nothing to them. Now there are somethings that can be read as an indirect direct forceful threat that will happen to the protestors in his speech. Now this is where I think they will take it. He and his regime elite do not want peace, he want and his regime elite want absolute control where nothing changes. This guy and the regime elite cannot be trusted one bit.

he did it in 2014 and he's (doing) going to do it again in 2020.... grab power

This time there will be resitance which cannot be ignored.

Yes, I was watching Khaosod English yesterday and one of the chants was don't stage a coup because we will fight back.

And per his speech which is like an ultimatum, they will be met with force and this might just be more bloodshed with a total and absolute powerful push for suppression. I don't think these students, young Thai, and other older Thai are going to back down to as they see it as tyranny and lies. They see it as a revolution of change for a rebirth.

So after a week or so he found out that his escalation tactics to scare and intimidate the demonstrator's very reasonable demands didn't work. But since the guy lives in opposite world he won't acknowledge that he and his minions, the way they grabbed power (screwing parliament and democracy) , that he is part of the problem and needs to go. Guess we will see new demonstrations this weekend.

Maybe this has more to do with scaring off potential Chinese tourists.

What tourists?

4 hours ago, lujanit said:

That story refers to tour groups not families or individuals travelling.

So, can we now expect thousands of families and individuals to flood into Thailand...?

It can be reinstated at a moments notice.

If a country declares a state of emergency foreign countries often issue travel advisories that advise their citizens not to travel there. Also it gives insurance companies the right to void their policies.

So, nobody is travelling here anyway.....

Lots of Yellow shirt protests too now. Can anyone confirm that many are told to do it by royalist bosses, government staff given time off if they go and other similar incentives?

They need tourists coming back asap to stimulate the economy and it might placate the protesters, but probably not too much.

Kyrgyzstan’s president steps down amid political unrest

Kyrgyzstan’s president, Sooronbay Jeenbekov, has resigned after violent protests erupted over parliamentary election results, saying he had no desire to go down in history as a man who brought bloodshed to his country.

That picture is priceless, whether intentional or not. I must say I'm a little surprised this is an open thread.

The reason given was that the situation has eased and government officers can continue handling the issue via normal measures.

I read in the free press that the real reason was the law courts ruled it was illegal, same as the order to shutter some online media sources was illegal.

For all those concerned,  Gen Khun Prayut Chan O Cha is not continuously occupied by the student protests, he has dozens of other daily schedules and meeting to attend.  The reason for his lifting of the emergency decree is simply because it's not warranted at this time. Should the student make trouble and violence again I am sure he will re-issue the order for emergency decree at the drop of a hat.  Hopefully the protestors will heed Khun Prayut's warning and get back to work and school.

Excellent work by Khun Prayut and the government.  Also, at this time Gen Khun Prayut Cha O Cha has been inspecting flooded provinces such as Changchasoe and Nakhon Ratchasima, as he needs to witness the devastation and crop destruction first hand. He has ordered the army to provide food, transport and shelter to the poor and needy.

They are not going to back down, because what previously caused protests and conflicts to stop is the very thing that is provoking this one.

That is the fundamental change in the playbook.

This is the New Era.

It is not going to be, as some on TVF keep saying, a new bunch of crooks who are no better than "the last lot".

This is the real thing.

More fantasy, the protesters have not caused any violence which must be highly disappointing for some, and have ran rings around the uniformed do do's in charge. His state of emergency was a total failure, his banning media outlets from covering the protests was as well as has been the comical yellow supporters who were from the army. He can forget everything else and concentrate on his resignation speech, it's a new age and he and his band of uniformed stuffed shirts will soon be consigned to history where they belong.

It's just a matter of time, the rank and file police/army will stand aside when the time comes. Nice photo picture III
