NICE, France (Reuters) - A woman was beheaded by an attacker with a knife who also killed two other people at a church in the French city of Nice on Thursday, police said, in an incident the city's mayor described as terrorism.

Mayor Christian Estrosi said on Twitter the knife attack had happened in or near the city's Notre Dame church and that police had detained the attacker.

Police said three people were confirmed to have died in the attack and several were injured.

A police source said a woman was decapitated. French politician Marine Le Pen also spoke of a decapitation having occurred in the attack.

The French anti-terrorist prosecutor's department said it had been asked to investigate the attack.

Reuters journalists at the scene said police armed with automatic weapons had put up a security cordon around the church, which is on Nice's Jean Medecin avenue, the city's main shopping thoroughfare. Ambulances and fire service vehicles were also at the scene.

The attack comes while France is still reeling from the beheading earlier this month of French middle school teacher Samuel Paty in Paris by a man of Chechen origin.

The attacker had said he wanted to punish Paty for showing pupils cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in a civics lesson.

It was not immediately clear what the motive was for the Nice attack, or if there was any connection to the cartoons, which Muslims consider to be blasphemous.

Since Paty's killing, French officials - backed by many ordinary citizens - have re-asserted the right to display the cartoons, and the images have been widely displayed at marches in solidarity with the killed teacher.

That has prompted an outpouring of anger in parts of the Muslim world, with some governments accusing French leader Emmanuel Macron of pursuing an anti-Islam agenda.

So if your Armenian it's time to get out of Dodge. Let's hope the French have had it with these 10 % of the population and vote La-Pen this time.

  • What they are pushing for is for France to adopt a blasphemy law. You can always submit to the Muslim World, today for cartoons, tomorrow for gender equality,  may girls sit next to boys in class

Is the attacker French?

answer:  We already know where he's from.

Only by welcoming these people into our civilised countries.

They haven't changed in the last 500 years, and why would anyone expect them to change?

It's a bit like the Thais saying really, if they weren't there (in the west), it wouldn't have happened.

Revenge for Lybia and so many other countries? Or just cartoons.

Another terrible act of evil. RIP to the victims and wishing the injured a quick recovery; condolences for the families and friends.

Vive la France!

Well, I suppose it could be the militant wing of the "Seventh Day Adventists"!

On a less cynical track, no doubt the President of Turkey will continue to bleat on about taking the <deleted> being an affront to him and all Muslims,!

I see from some of the posts above that this vile  murderer has, like every Islamist terrorist before them, achieved their aim of stirring up more ignorant hatred against the vast majority of innocent Muslims who condemn such outrages as much as we.

Hatred which leads to retaliation such as "An attempted murder enquiry has also been opened in Paris after two Muslim women were "stabbed repeatedly" underneath the Eiffel Tower, prosecutors confirmed today.

French police have arrested two female suspects following the suspected racist attacks which were allegedly accompanied by the words "Dirty Arabs!"

(Source)

Such 'retaliation' is exactly what these terrorist scum want as it acts as recruiters for them. Those of us old enough to remember the Troubles know that very well.

Why do you people keep on doing the terrorists work for them?

Extremist followers of religion X love to give religion X a bad name. It almost feels like we’d be better off without extremists.

Agreed.

yet a number of things also have to change in France and in Europe.

also, the Muslims themselves should also help cleaning up their ranks of extremist nutters.

in Germany, not too long ago, extremists there setup "sharia patrols" to scold other Muslims in German streets if they saw women smoking cigarettes, or unaccompanied by a man.

according to media reports, hate speech has been going on for ages in certain mosques, why don't Muslims organize "sharia patrols" to spy on extremists and their networks and report them?

I guess this already has been going on behind the scenes, but doing it officially would send a message. it's time that Muslim religious leaders do more than just condemning these attacks, it's time for them to act against extremists. The big bosses should address their flock and ask every one of them to personally report to them any extremist activities.

then internationally, people like Erdogan are stirring the pot, it's time Erdogan gets put on a muzzle. Merkel and Macron need to talk with Putin, give him whatever assurances he needs and see that this has an end.

Lets not let incidents like this distract everyone from France's commitment to diversity and inclusion, a powerful and ambitious approach to making France, and the world, a better, and safer, place. Remember, diversity is our strength!

And before anyone jumps to conclusions I would like to hear the suspect's side of the story, surely these attacks don't happen for no reason, the victim's must have provoked the attacker in one way or another. Let's wait for the full story to come out before passing on the blame.

Looks like someone respected their own Islamic laws then

It'll be interesting to see how he reacts, given he stirred this up.

Because Islam. The end. Give us a scenario where killing someone is justified. Any scenario!

So basically we have, or they're trying to impose by terror, a state within a state, an Islamic state within the French state.

it will become difficult to tell us that Islam and Islamism are not the same.

I never understood their obsession for virgins. I really prefer someone with some experience.

the assailant is a 21-year-old Tunisian Brahim Aoussaoui. Non-asylum seeker in France, he arrived in Lampedusa at the end of September where he had been quarantined by the Italian authorities before being subject to an obligation to leave Italian territory and left free...  and arrived on French territory at the beginning of October.
