I am residing in Pattaya for 6 months on a diving course and play the guitar, is there anywhere I can play? I have been told I require a work permit or I'll be arrested and chucked out the country.

Is this true?

If not where can I jam with other like minded people and help entertain others who wnat to listen?

Thanks for your help :o:D

Yeah you do need a work permit to get paid. Why not pop along to the Blues Factory and see Dave. He could probably put you in touch with other musicians who just jam for fun etc. I also believe there is a place down in Jomtien where Farang jam together.

Do you know the name of the place in Jomtien, or where it's located?

I have learned from others in Pattaya who have had the same question. On a drop in basis, no WP. Blues Factory has farang guests from time to time, no worries. The cops enjoy the music too perhaps.

Given the amount of raids lately, I wouldn't dare work where I could be caught. I've heard stories of farang teachers running out the back fire escape when the BiB showed up at the front door! :o

If you play your guitar in a public place, like a restaurant or bar, you need a workpermit even if you do not get any pay. This is the legal standpoint.

Naturally this is not checked regularely, but you may have bad luck if another place nearby feels his business goes slow and calls the authorities just to get ride of a competitor. I remember reading such reports in this forum about two years ago.

I have found the place in Jomtien, it is The Bristol Music Bar Soi 6 Jomtien.

They hold open mic and JAm sessions on a Sunday starting around 6 - 7 going on late. They hold a licence for all to see that allows all Farangs to play without the need for a work permit.

They hold the sessions to collect funds for the Camillion Society who take care of kids who are born with HIV and AIDS and collections during the evening and they tell me they have collected more than 160,000 BAht since they started in September.

Hope to meet you there

I know of one legal precedent, set in a Chiang Mai court case, ruling that foreigners can jam if music is their hobby. The judge's ruling likened it to karaoke singing. There's a long thread on it here somewhere, search for 'jamming'.
