BANGKOK (NNT) - The Policy and Planning Committee for Marine and Coastal Resources Management has approved six new ministerial announcements on mangrove forest conservation and coastal erosion control, as these resources still need serious and systematic management.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, has chaired a Policy and Planning Committee for Marine and Coastal Resources Management’s meeting to discuss marine and coastal resource management guidelines, and called for the legislation under the Act on the Promotion of Marine and Coastal Resources Management BE 2558.

The DPM said Thailand’s marine coastal resources still require continuous and systematic management, from the declaration of protected areas to conservation projects, which include national dugong conservation and coastal erosion control.

Gen Prawit said today all sectors including the general public must cooperate with these conservation and restoration efforts, in order to protect the abundance and balance of marine and coastal resources.

On this matter, the Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Varawut Silpa-archa said collective efforts must be made with public benefits being a priority, along with sustainability and the prevention of future consequences.

He said the projects must strike a balance between conservation and usage of these resources, and has instructed related agencies to pursue the projects strictly in line with the policy and planning committee’s resolution.
