While we were a member of the customs union and single market we didn't need to.

Vote.Leave promised us that would remain after we left. I'll be charitable and say that they were wrong.

The UK should just cancel the talks. They don't want to agree to a reasonable deal with the EU. Ok, fine, then don't waste everybody's time. Boris and others always said no deal is better than a

Macron and Merkel move to keep Brexit off EU summit’s agenda

Germany’s Angela Merkel and France’s Emmanuel Macron are said to have agreed that Brexit talks should not be discussed at this week’s summit of EU leaders, clearly signalling that member states will not be making any last-ditch concessions to the UK - and will agree with whatever Michel Barnier, chief EU negotiator, decides to do in the next few days.

Bloomberg’s news platform reports that the pair made the decision during a phone call on Monday which also involved the presidents of the European Commission and Council, Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel.

The discussion between the four leaders took place before the phone conversation between Ms von der Leyen and Boris Johnson in which the two agreed to meet in Brussels in the “coming days” in a last-ditch effort to try and reach a trade agreement.

An EU official confirmed that Brexit currently is not on the summit agenda and said Mr Barnier’s negotiating mandate did not need to change,

Looks like the EU states are all speaking with one voice.

But other good news for both

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-deal-northern-ireland-protocol-latest-b1767989.html

The EU and the UK have agreed a deal “in principle” on the fraught issue of the Northern Ireland border, after months of confusion about how the Brexit withdrawal agreement should be implemented.

Under the agreement, the British government has agreed to withdraw clauses from its taxation and internal market bills that would have breached international law by giving it the power to unilaterally overwrite the treaty.

So why does the UK want to have access to the single market?

Brexiteers are like shoppers without a mask, they think the rules are for other people.

I worry not. If we have to pay a price to leave the EU then so be it. I can live with that.

That was never in the plan when they voted: wait a minute, there was no plan.

Why? Because Von der Leyen is German? She's the president of the EU, her nationality is irrelevant. Was Luxemburg ruling the EU when Junker was president? Was Portugal ruling the EU when Barroso was president? Just Brexiteer nonsense.

Germany is the Eurozone country which supplies most money into the EU fonds, that's why they think they're the leaders.

They may or may not think so but the fact is they aren't. power is shared equally by 27 nations (used to be 28) and is not distributed according to a particular nation's wealth. EU principals 101.

That's EU's institutional tragedy. EU was not established as a welfare state but as a financial institution. The veto rights of EU's member states were just set up to give the smaller nations a voice. But still money talks in the EU. One of the reasons why the EU is dissolving.

Your link to that is?

Evidence or Brexiteer rhetoric? EU law would say Brexiteer rhetoric.

Would that be of any importance for the man in the street of the E.U. members?

I still try to find out what concrete impact the E.U. had/has on us.?

If you believe that the Germans have no influence of the whole of the EU then you have no idea and its

pointless replying. The clue is in who pays into the club. As for the Puppets of the so called presidents, they do as they are told.

Interesting personal view.

And I like particularly the : "If you believe...then you have no idea and it is pointless replying"

Can be used by anyone, on every possible subject.

No, because, if you had read the post on which I was commenting, you would have seen that the decision was made in a telephone conversation between Frau Merkel and M. Macron. The other 25 states were not involved.

What decision? That they didn't want brexit on the summit agenda? Hardly ruling the EU. They were voicing their opinion on the agenda, not making a ruling. Logical really as there's nothing new to discuss.

I’m afraid you have to accept the sovereignty of those states even if you don’t like their sovereign decisions to remain a EU member.

And such decision making calls are sure not made in U.K. we must believe ?....influencers you could call them ...E.R.G . Mister Mog .....one of them as example ......or forgot already mister Cummings .....? ????

If you look at the attached link the EU has quite a large impact on our everyday lives https://amp.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/cw94ct/so_what_has_the_eu_ever_done_for_us/

Forgive me for saying it but, as a Belgian, you have probably become a bit blasé about the benefits of the EU. (Some of) us in the UK are all too aware of what we are about to lose.

I have no problem with that at all. It is the likes of yourself and remainers telling us constantly why we shouldn't have left the EU. Are you accepting that the UK has left because I have a good memory and over the years you are one of those telling us what a mistake it is

If those countries haven't got the gumption and gonads to be independent well good luck to them.

Here is some background on the issue. It might be a bit academic put it has the facts.  I could go on all day but I have no doubts you will rubbish it all. After all who wouldn't look after its own interest putting the largest amount in.

Not one word on how Germany exerts a greater influence on EU decision making than any other member.

Nice try but completely off topic.
