After Admitting Mistake, AstraZeneca Faces Difficult Questions About Its Vaccine

Some trial participants only got a partial dose of AstraZeneca’s vaccine. Experts said the company’s spotty disclosures have eroded confidence.

...

Officials in the United States have noted that the results were not clear. It was the head of the flagship federal vaccine initiative — not the company — who first disclosed that the vaccine’s most promising results did not reflect data from older people.

The upshot, the experts said, is that the odds of regulators in the United States and elsewhere quickly authorizing the emergency use of the AstraZeneca vaccine are declining, an unexpected setback in the global campaign to corral the devastating pandemic.

“I think that they have really damaged confidence in their whole development program,” said Geoffrey Porges, an analyst for the investment bank SVB Leerink.

And yet Thailand has agreed to buy and produce this vaccine.

The AZ vaccine was slated to be the main vaccine for most of the developing world countries...because it doesn't have the same freezing/special care requirements as the Pfizer and Moderna versions.

Whether and how that might change, in the wake of AZ's latest vaccine trial snafus, remains to be seen.

It might take at least one more year till they allow us dirty farangs to come back to Thailand, even if we were vaccinated.

Nothing stopping the vast majority of "dirty farangs" coming back now other than themselves.

Private hospitals can source their own vaccine supply, he added.

Start saving now guys & gals, I don’t think foreigners are going to be anywhere high on the Thai vaccine priority list. We will need to go private.

WHY are children priority?

Remember, even people who have been vaccinated can contract the virus and are at risk of spreading the virus!

It the US, it's front line responders and elderly in nursing homes first.  Just listened to an interview with the CEO of the company making the jabs.  He said they are still evolving and will for sure change over the coming months.

It's really amazing technology.  mRNA technology.

But while millions of health care workers and residents of nursing homes may get immunized against the virus before the end of the year, the rest of the population is going to have to wait for months.
Healthy adults under the age of 65 and children may well have to wait until late spring or even the summer, depending on how many vaccines get approved, how quickly they can be manufactured and distributed, and how the debate goes over allocation.

England starts using Pfizer this week, the vaccine requires special freezing conditions, Astra Zeneca can be kept at normal fridge temperatures, Thailand would have great difficulty with the Pfizer vaccine.

Astra vaccine has not yet finished trials and the rate of efficiency is still being questioned as they have got different results , better up to 90% buy giving a half dose first then a full dose second , but only 60% by giving 2 full shots.

I think the jury is still out on this, but it seems that the Astra vaccine will be the one used in warm climates and third world countries to start with.

It has been trialed in warm climates.

I would have expected the Chinese vaccine to be released into Thailand as they have supposed to have tested it on their army and hundreds of thousands of people.

There must be a problem with this vaccine, as China guaranteed Thailand supply.

But good news is England are rolling and Thailand is preparing, I would hazard a guess that their program will start before may, if Astra sort out their dosing problem.

As for expats in LOS you should get the vaccine free as most countries are going to make it free, but that remains to be seen, also would you want it? and will Thailand force it upon you?

Watch this space, the airlines are polishing the planes as we speak.

I predict that anyone who wants to enter Thailand in the future must get a vaccine cert.

Makes perfect sense.  Yes, the countries that funded the vaccines will get first shot at it.  Also, of course Thai citizens should get it first. Do you think your home country would allow a Thai visitor to step in line before a citizen.  Nothing stopping people to go home and get vaccinated in their home countries.  And if private hospitals do get a hold of some then yes, they are entitled to charge as they will surely have to pay for the vaccine and they are entitled to a profit.  Maybe some of the private insurance companies will pay for your vaccines or subsidize as it is in their best interest for their clients to not catch covid

If the numbers in the OP are accurate each dose costs (the government) Bt.23.00.

One would hope they cost the end user Bt100.00 or less but I highly doubt that will be the case.

Current flu shots at private hospitals are from 600-800B per jab.  I'm guessing these should be about in the same range?

In the US, an independent group analyzes the data and makes the decision on what to do.  Easy to find out about mRNA tech.  Google it.

The good news for me is I will be able to wait another year (2022) if the vaccine becomes a compulsory requirement for extension of stay or a visa
