Bangkok, 8 December 2020 – Whether it’s working from home, learning remotely, or social distancing, everybody’s life has changed in 2020 and  people have looked for comfort wherever they could find it. People come to Twitter for a sense of connectivity, togetherness, and encouragement; and in 2020, this was more true than ever. People used Twitter to try and change the world, help others, to encourage them, inspire them, or even just make them laugh. They also used Twitter to promote businesses that needed support during the pandemic.

A year of connections, communities, and conversations

People come to Twitter to find a sense of connectivity, togetherness and encouragement, and in 2020 this was more true than ever. While face-to-face connections proved difficult at times, Twitter helped to bring people together through fun, interesting and authentic conversations; and we saw many using Twitter to help others. Despite everything, Thais didn't lose their sense of humour and fun, with 2020's Most Tweeted about emojis showing happiness, laughter and love.

From gaming (#เกมดีบอกต่อ), and food (#อร่อยไปแดก), to cooking (#ทำอาหาร), #ชุมชนนักสร้างสรรค์ (creative community) and many more; communities on Twitter have been instrumental in giving people a sense of connection, as have conversations. While conversations around entertainment and K-Pop remained popular, we saw people also go to Twitter to participate in important discussions and social movements with conversations around marriage equality and LGBT resonating. In the second half of the year, social justice became a popular conversation with hashtags such as #whatishappeninginthailand and #หยุดคุกคามประชาชน used.

Twitter has witnessed many of Thailand’s key moments this year; and despite the challenges, Thais have shone through with a combination of fun and passion. Most Tweeted about hashtags in Thailand

The power of hashtags is well known; and in Thailand, we have seen its importance grow exponentially this year. From bringing people and communities together, to driving conversations and sharing important information, hashtag has become an invaluable tool for many on Twitter this year.

While hashtags for singers Peck Palitchoke (#เป๊กผลิตโชค), Lisa (#lisa) and Bam Bam (#bambam) have been the most Tweeted in 2020; a new trend this year is the growth of conversations around Thai Y-Series actors as well as hashtags about social movements. It’s also been a big news year in Thailand with many of the top stories breaking on Twitter, and updates around COVID-19 dominating. It's no surprise that #โควิด19 was the seventh Most Tweeted about hashtag in Thailand in 2020. #covid19 (and variations on it) was Tweeted nearly 400 million times globally, and it also changed the way we talked about so many other topics.

Most Tweeted about people in Thailand

We've seen growth in the diversity of conversations, communities and people on Twitter in Thailand this year. Our most Tweeted about people in 2020 show that everyone has a voice on Twitter. This is highlighted with nine out of the top 10 being regular people. It's not about the number of followers but about being relevant, and Twitter is a place where people can see all sides of the conversation and connect to each other.

Most Tweeted about entertainers and entertainment hashtags

Thailand is a fun-loving country and the Thai people's love of all things entertainment knows no bounds. From music, to TV dramas, and movies, Thais love to Tweet about their favourite stars, latest releases and ongoing plot lines. This year we saw the power of fandoms bring together Thailand's passionate entertainment community on Twitter.

New this year was the growth in popularity of Y-Series in Thailand. We saw actors like @bbrightvc, @winmetawin, @gulfkanawut and @MSuppasit to take four of the top five spots of the Most Tweeted about entertainers in Thailand, and on-screen “couples” such as Bright-Win (#ไบร์ทวิน), Off-Gun (#ออฟกัน) and Mew-Gulf (#หวานใจมิวกลัฟ) into the Most Tweeted about entertainment hashtags in 2020.

This year, people have used Twitter not just to keep up with what’s happening around the world, but to maintain connections with one another despite being apart. The challenging circumstances of 2020 has highlighted Twitter’s role in driving real-time conversations and facilitating the interactions that matter. Thais have bonded on Twitter and conversations have been varied with new people and new topics generating authentic conversations and connections. As we enter 2021, it’s clear that Twitter is the only place for the buzziest, funniest, most interesting, and most relevant culture moments, and we expect this to continue moving forward,” said Arvinder Gujral, Managing Director, Southeast Asia, at Twitter.
