Even though floods in Nakhon Si Thammarat province are receding, many residents are still not able to return home and are having to find shelter alongside roads.

The South has seen the worst flooding in 30 years last week, and though many areas have been cleared, several downstream zones are still under water.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha visited several downstream areas in Nakhon Si Thammarat on Monday.

Sad as this is, it's nothing new. I have seen over the last 20 years much flooding in Southern Thailand (anyone remember Hat Yai 2000 and Nakhon Si Thammarat/Surat Thani 2011?). Although tragic for families of those perished, these Thais are resilient and will pick themselves up with minimal help from the government (just as well). An opportunity for fishing for many.

Yes and 2010 which was worse.

But Hat Yai 2020 didn't happen, the city's flood mitigation canals, completed since 2010, worked there was no flooding in Hat Yai this year.

While the PM shelters in military housing free of charge.
