Concerns raised over internet gateway plan

Featured Replies

The Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) yesterday expressed concern over the plan to establish the National Internet Gateway (NIG), urging the government to assess the impact on the end-users in the country. In a letter sent to Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Minister of Post and Telecommunications Chea Vandeth yesterday, the AIC and its members said the draft of the sub-decree on the establishment of NIG poses serious risks to businesses and internet platforms.

“Having a single national internet gateway creates concerns in terms of failure, as there is no alternative to the country’s connection to the global internet,” the letter said. The AIC believes that establishing a single national internet gateway undermines citizens’ rights to internet access, raising grave concerns about freedom of expression, media censorship, user privacy, deteriorating internet speed and increasing cybersecurity risks.

“Against this backdrop, we urge the government to assess the impact on the end-users in the country, to which AIC will be grateful to participate and deliver further inputs,” the letter added. The AIC is an industry association, composed of leading internet and technology companies including Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Twitter, SAP, Cloudflare, Expedia Group, Airbnb, Grab, LinkedIn, LINE, Rakuten, Yahoo (Verizon Media) and Booking.com.

A single channel (a.k.a. choke point)  into and out of Cambodia would likely destroy any foreign company's interest in opening a business depending on instant communications with the head office and SEA clients.

HE is spending too much time in the company of his Beijing Boss.

Well, at least this 'Asian' coalition contains one Asian company.

Might I suggest signing up for Musk's Starlink ????  BTW, the SpaceX SN8 test about 24 hrs ago was about 98% successful, however, it's that last 2% that'll kill ya!  Went on the tour in their Hawthorn, CA main facility a few years ago, awesome.  Brought back all kinds of memories as I worked in some of those buildings when it was Northrop ????  ????  nudge nudge
