Britons may need visas to stay in EU more than three months: French minister

PARIS (Reuters) - British citizens may need visas for stays in the European Union longer than three months after Brexit from Jan. 1, French European Affairs junior minister Clement Beaune said on Thursday.

 

Beaune said the matter was still being negotiated.

 

"For stays of more than three months, there may be visa applications, professional or other, and this is a point that is still under discussion", Beaune told reporters.

 

"Whatever happens on Jan. 1, we will be in a different universe. We are ready," Beaune added.

 

Beaune visited the Gare du Nord train station and the terminal of Eurostar in Paris to check on the new border control facilities ahead of Britain's full exit from the European Union.

 

Britain told the EU on Thursday it should make significant concessions to break the impasse in Brexit trade talks by the end of the weekend to give some clarity about the finale to the five-year-old Brexit crisis.

UK wanted to leave.

No one forced them.

Cannot expect to carry on the same as before.

Maybe UK thought that EU was part of it's empire.

Fair enough,their country their rules,lets hope the uk stops all benefits for eu citizens living in the uk,we,ve got enough home grown ponces and dossers without having to import them.

A couple of forms to fill in and a small fee. It's not going to be a massive invasion of privacy and reams of photos/paperwork like a Thai marriage visa that so many of this forum have to put up with.

 

Expect lots of minor issues dressed up as cataclysmic events in the coming months.

Indeed. That would come into the negotiation. But what should also trouble the UK is the number of EU agriculture workers they depend on to plant and harvest crops. This dependence might actually grow in a no-deal Brexit as food imports become more expensive. THe UK will have to decide whether to allow a visa exemption to those East European agriculture workers or to grant them work visas.

That is logical to me as the EU will no longer be in the bloc.

This will also create revenue for the EU.

Bit surprised that they have agreed to a 3 months visa free access

WTO rules - no problem

Entry visas - no problem

Lack of reciprocal health care - no problem

Business unsure of future - no problem

 

All these non-problems keep mounting up.

I don’t know what the problem is with some of you non Brits ,I think it’s because your country has no history of anything worthwhile and you are so jealous of our history that you keep bringing it up. I have lived in the UK all my life except for he last 12 years and never heard the empire mentioned  by friends,workmates or anyone else.. What do you think we do in pubs every night ,drink to the past and say “ Cheers here’s to the empire”

That will depend on how well the pound is doing v the Euro or the workers own currency.They won't come if the pound is struggling.

The plucky Brexiteers will pick all those crops for buttons because its their patriotic duty.

They will have to now that their wet dream of preventing Eastern Europeans doing it has come to fruition.
