Bangkok countdown events cancelled, public told to work from home for 14 days

 

 

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced the cancellation of all public countdown events after new cases of COVID-19 were found in the capital and nearby provinces.

 

Any private organisations wishing to hold a countdown event on New Year’s Eve must now request permission from the BMA.

 

On Sunday, Baengsaen Municipality also announced the cancellation of its "Countdown 2021" event, while Nakhon Ratchasima on Saturday said its countdown event would now not be taking place, with organisers at both events citing COVID-19 prevention as the reason for the cancellations.

 

Also on Sunday, the BMA said that where possible members of the public should work from home for the next 14 days.

 

Bangkok Christian College also announced it will close for 11 days until 3 January, with more schools in Bangkok and the surrounding area expected to follow suit.

 

The news comes after public health officials on Sunday confirmed the total number of COVID-19 cases in Samut Sakhon has risen to 694.

 

The cases are linked to a shrimp market in the province with the majority of those infected being migrant workers from Myanmar, as well as some locally transmitted cases in Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Ayutthaya, and Nakhon Pathom.

 

On Saturday, the province of Samut Sakhon was placed under full lockdown.

This will be interesting to watch. Pattaya has not much more than entertainment of whatever kind as income source. It is hard for the local government to cancel everything.

There goes my Icon Siam Hobbs New Years balcony countdown dinner. Wonder how the refunds will be processed. Oh well it just ends a sh**t*eyear without a bang.  Looks like we will celebrate from the penthouse balcony. Wonder if the fireworks will still be set off.

They cancelled everything earlier this year, so why would it be harder this time?

All this new circus is going to cost billions of bahts at the end with all the events canceled.

 

All  of this because few already wealthy Thais in the seafood trade wanted to save some money prefering to employ illegal migrants from Myanmar, then they didn't have to pay for them to be quarantined.

 

I hope these irresponsibles will be named, ashamed, heavily fined and even condemned to jail 

 

Of course i don't hold my breath as it shows also than the Thai governement supposed to be in charge in fact doesn't do his duty, protecting and controling the borders and controling the markets and the employers

 

There are not an army, a police and an administration paid for that?

Maybe they are too busy chasing few students in the streets?

Well, those people involved in this must be tried for human trafficking. 

 

They are actually busy finding foreigners to fine them for throwing a cigarette butt. or may be they r busy harassing foreigners riding a motorbike.

That didn't stop governments around the World, and Thai government in the past, from imposing a lockdown. Remember 9 months back? At that time numbers were nowhere near what just happened in Samut Sakhorn and figures seen today will be seen as tiny compared to what's likely coming. Many people go to Maha Chai to buy seafood from all over Thailand. Also from places with public transport like Bangkok. Takes just one person to infect dozens in a packed train, or busy shopping mall, or ...

 

And Pattaya isn't immune to that. If numbers explode, that'll be authorities' only option.

Bangkok asks for cooperation to refrain from all New Year activities

The governor of Bangkok, General Asawin Kwanmuang, along with his deputy Lt-General Sophon Phisutthiwong, called an urgent meeting of relevant agencies, such as the Department of Disease Control, the Ministry of Interior and hospital directors in Bangkok to assess the situation amid the risk of the Covid-19 virus spreading after the outbreak in Samut Sakhon province and nearby areas.

 

Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, a spokesman for the city administration, said the meeting was called as Bangkok is a neighbouring province of Samut Sakhon and is vulnerable to the epidemic spreading.

 

Two persons who have been found to be infected in Bangkok had travelled to the affected area. Therefore, Bangkok will have a proactive investigation, especially in 472 markets, including construction sites and the places where the goods were picked up from Samut Sakhon province.

 

The committees of the Communicable Diseases Committee emphasised three main locations to prevent an outbreak:

 

1. Entertainment establishments, pubs, bars, entertainment venues and establishments similar to entertainment venues will see more stringent preventive measures by prohibiting dancing or gathering of crowds. Table must not be less than 1.5 metres apart.

 

2. Boxing stadium, which had seen an outbreak months ago, must be strict about people wearing masks and implement preventive measures, including limiting the number of visitors.

 

3. Markets must emphasise on 100 per cent wearing of masks.

 

Meanwhile, people can visit public parks and temples wearing a mask.

 

The Bangkok administration has asked for cooperation from every sector to refrain from New Year activities. If they want the event to be organised, permission must be requested by applying to the Bangkok Health Office with a strict disease control plan.

 

Bangkok has coordinated with schools in three districts, which are in the boundary area of Samut Sakhon province, namely Bang Khun Thian, Bang Bon, and Nong Khaem, to be closed for 14 days, from December 21 to January 4.

 

The schools must have a study plan and online teaching arrangements. As for schools in other areas, if it is deemed appropriate to close, the decision can be made by the school administrator to reduce the risk of further transmission.

So all Thailand needs to do is actually TEST a little, discover some cases, and justify some NY lockdowns.

 

The likely reason is that ICUs in covid hospitals were probably reaching maximum occupancy, like in neighbouring countries, but...shhht...

From the story posted above mine as well as this one I linked, it dies not appear that the events have actually been canceled, just asked to not go on by the the sounds of it.  As I see it written as long as social distancing is adhered to then they will not shut it down.  However, I await the other shoe to drop and the Government CCSA to possibly step In.

I agree here did you see the Sky news last night, they were all rushing out of London at the train stations?..... and were told they wouldn't be allowed to travel meaning some of them most would certainly would be carrying and transporting the virus, transmitting it for sure!.. Good Morning!

I've just been reading the BBC news about the situation in UK. Sounds bad.

 

However, I've just had some good news. We were due to go down to Korat for the new year. Madam Moon wanted time with her son and grand daughter.

 

But we've just heard that her son, who's in the army has to go off on duty over that period. So that bails me out of the tricky situation of refusing to go! I'm staying put right here in rural Issan until this is all over.

Well its better to be on the safe side all festive activities should be reviewed and if needed cancelled

If the situation gets worse Provincial leaders could start the lockdown procedures  

I am keeping a eye out on this could be i will need to stock up as per  say from the supermarket
