REUTERS/Henry Nicholls/File Photo PARIS (Reuters) - The father of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday he was in the process of applying for a French passport to maintain his ties with the European Union after Brexit. Stanley Johnson, a former member of the European Parliament who voted Remain in Britain's 2016 referendum, told RTL radio he wanted to become a French citizen because of strong family links to France. "If I understand it correctly, I am French. My mother was born in France, her mother was totally French as was her grandfather. So for me it is about reclaiming what I already have. And that makes me very happy," said the 80-year-old Johnson, who was speaking in French. "I will always be a European, that's for sure. One cannot tell the British people: you are not Europeans. Having a tie with the European Union is important," he added. His son Boris was the public face of the Leave campaign in the 2016 referendum and says Britain can "prosper mightily" as a fully sovereign nation outside what he sees as an overly bureaucratic EU. But on Wednesday the prime minister sounded a more concilatory note as parliament approved a new trade deal with the EU, saying: "This is not the end of Britain as a European country. We are in many ways the quintessential European civilisation... and we will continue to be that." The United Kingdom officially leaves the EU's orbit on Thursday night, after an often strained 48-year liaison with the European project. -- © Copyright Reuters 2020-12-31 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow Thaivisa on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates 1

nausea
The words "rat" and ""sinking ship" spring to mind. I'm half Irish, and I must admit getting an Irish passport has crossed my mind, just for the visa free travel thing. In fact, going back in time, when I was as fit as <deleted>, when it was a toss up between the Royal Marines and the Foreign Legion, that guarantee of French citizenship was pretty tempting; unfortunately life, in the sense of a woman, intervened, and I went a totally different course. 1 1

Popular Post bigupandchill
The EU suits small European countries, allowing them to 'punch above their weight' and large European countries all of which have been led into catastrophes for themselves and their neighbours in the not too distant past. We on the other hand are unique in being a large European country with a 1000 years of (relatively) good governance so have no need for the political straitjacket the EU now imposes. 1 1 3 2
Hanuman2547
Now for more pressing matters, will all the European players in the EPL now have to apply for Work Permits? Will some of the lesser EU players not qualify for a WP?

blazes
Leads me to suspect that Boris is a "Russian asset." Papa wants to be a French citizen. France has always had a close relationship with Russia. Boris is not exactly an Anglo-American name. Come to think of it, there are a few apparent connections between our Boris and Boris Godunov, who began his political career in the court of Ivan the Terrible. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Godunov If only the Brits could "impeach" their leaders.....
