I have a number of US accounts and all of them seem to want a US phone number. I have been using Skype with a phone number subscription. Skype does not work for receiving text messages for one time passwords and the call me option seems to be hit and miss. Can someone recommend a way of receiving US text messages?

It's a common problem and getting more common.

There was a long thread about that issue fairly frequently but I searched for it and didn't find it.

If someone else can find it and post the link, that could be a good starting point to continue this discussion.

Thanks for the feedback. I was not able to find the thread via the Thaivisa search but with doing a google search I found the following thread which gives me some things to try.

OK, thanks for that.

But that's not the more recently active thread that I was looking for.

About Google Voice, if you don't have it already, you probably won't be able to start one from Thailand even with a VPN.

You'll have to do a bit of research on your specific financial institution's 2FA procedures, and see what others report as working for them.

There are just too many variables, and options, to post without a bit of narrowing down.

That linked thread you found probably has as much detail as you'll find with this post. And there must be at least a dozen other similar threads. There was a longish one more recently, maybe in the General, or Home Country sub-forums.

In the distant past Google Voice did not work for every 2FA application I require, but over the past few years it satisfies 100% of my requirements. That may be down to MNP, as much as anything? I also use Talkatone, which is free and works well. And also keep my T-Mobile SIM alive. But I switched almost everyhting over to my GV number.

From a American  perspective . I have several methods! One is a cheap Alcatel flip phone  unlocked ,gsm,4G capable,(2016 that I ordered from ebay ! I use mintmobile  (uses Tmobile GSM towers) in the states! During the time I was in the states, they sent me a sim card and activated it while I was there!

I just use this to receive free text messages ,such as codes from credit card and  banks from the states!

The other method is google voice to receive phone calls and text but this is becoming more difficult  ! Some institutions (know its a voip source and they considered that less secure now ! For incoming phone calls I use the call forwarding on the USA#  to go to my Google voice#.

The other way is through Email, which is good for us but still isn't secure enough  for some institutions !

Financial institutions are becoming more difficult to ride  their verification processes recently in respect to their 2 step verification ! Their phone apps require the latest phone  operating systems(ios and Android OS). Keep in mind by using a computer you can still access your accounts but you still need to meet their verification process as mentioned  above.

I'm currently looking for another cheap phone from the states that's not threaten by the  USA cell phone networks  sunset procedures!

It's not easy living in Thailand when it comes to keeping USA financial ties IMOP!
