Serpentine belt, when to replace

Featured Replies

Got a Honda city 2014, 50k on the clock, will be 7 years old in march.

when should you replace the serpentine belt, manual says  inspect every 40k

but no time when to change it,  looked around the web found 10 different answers.

5, years, 7 years, 9 years., or 60-100k, different materials belts are made from and so on, and on.

what do you guys think. ?

The belt looks in great shape as far as i can see. should I push it 2 more years ?

I do so dislike,  taking my car to Honda !!!!!!!!!!!!! but even worse is Mr Somchai !!!!!!!!

Maybe if it broke and the water pump was not in the loop, ( not checked that yet)   would get about an hour before battery was dead, maybe time enough to get to a garage and get new one fitted.

what you think. ?

Just have a look at the V's, if they are showing signs of cracks then replace..The poly-V type last waaaaay longer than the old V-belts..

Can you afford to take that risk? If the official version says 40k then get it changed. It's not a difficult task. If you don't like the Honda dealer (I can't think why not) then look for one of the franchise repair shops, like B Quick or Tire Shop. I used both and found then to be professional and honest.

Before 140k!

Mine just disintegrated and the car exploded with steam like the Chernobyl plant.

It was a relative easy fix, even country side.

Take it to a "Cockpit" or a "B-Quik" if your worried about it and change it.

Change the tensioner at the same time

What tensioner....?

You really should refrain from shooting at the hip ...

Brings into doubt your credibility from those who read your posts

Serpentine belts most all have tensioners

I am sure there maybe some out there, could even be the OP's Honda, but in my long life of fooling with stuff, it has always been an ancillary that did the adjusting, my truck and even my Suzuki in LOS use the alternator...

You sure you're not thinking of cam belts....?

In general original factory-fit auxiliary belts will last a minimum of 8 years/80k miles (130k kilometers) in normal driving conditions.

However if they have been run with too much or too little tension then life is considerably reduced.

All belts need some means of tensioning - this can be applied via a separate tensioner assy (static or dynamic) or by pivoting a component such as the alternator or a/c compressor. A few brands (Ford) are fitted with stretch belts which must be installed with a special tool. This is for cost-saving and in my experience these belts often lose their tension prematurely and start squealing.

In my business we often replace aux belts at the same time as doing a cambelt job (usually there is no additional labour charge).

Belts are not expensive and I would replace at no more than 8 years, irrespective of condition. Buy OE or an OE-spec brand such as Continental, Gates, Mitsuboshi Belting etc.

To look at the V's you need to remove them, can as well replace them at the same time, for what they cost, since the labor has been done already.

I replaced the poly V's from my Navara at 200K km, because the power  steering sometimes made noise when turned completely. Replaced the second belt at the same time of course
