Love the rickety old trains here.....one day, when this whole thing is over, I am going to again get the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai......sit back with a cold beer and some pleasant company and just enjoy the ride.....When this whole thing is over......

The Fun Police got that too did they? Shame, a few beers on a Thai train was one of the highlights of travelling on them.

Well, it's more accurate to say that the beer ban on trains led to a slight increase in price from the vendors.  Last time I took the train to Chiang Mai from Bangkok I was asked several times if I wanted a beer and it was two Chang for 160 baht.

Here they didn't cancel trains to prevent travelling, but instead they cut down how many passengers that were allowed on each train and it requires a seat reservation on those trains doing the longer routes.

People need to travel domestically because of various reasons, so is it not better to limit how many allowed on each train instead of people now will find other means of transportation like crowded tour buses and such?

I have very nostalgic memories of 3rd class train travel, just so much fun & freedom, life will never be like that again.

The chain across the last carriage, I would sit there with a beer, cigarette & camera, loving the passing countryside, waving at the friendly locals, sigh.....I fear those days will soon be lost forevermore and ????????

I do as well, I think I posted some pictures on the train forum, I've done both ends of the spectrum, the 3rd class great times & the ultra 5 star Eastern and Oriental Express from  Singapore to BKK, but I still love the 3rd class experience, you wouldn't get that in Europe nowadays. ????

Yes I remember, years ago I traveled from Ratchaburi to Penang (Butterworth) every 3 months

17 hours per trip and the best part was a few cold beers on the sleeper train.
