PHUKET:-- Phuket provincial officials have put illegal dumping of trash as an eyesore and health concern back on the agenda by highlighting a dumpsite in Cherng Talay.

The Phuket office of the Department of Public Relation (Phuket PR) posted photos of piles of trash in Baan Layan on their official Facebook page yesterday (Jan 15) after receiving complaints from the public about it.

Local residents had appealed to authorities to take action over rotting garbage from businesses and contractors being dumped in the area of Soi Layan 1, in Moo 6, Cherng Talay.

No worries, they'll hire a truck to pick it all up, and then dump everything into the ocean!

My wife's village in Khon Kaen at the outskirts of the village has a designated area with a large metal room that the walls are wire mesh. You open the door, and throw the garbage in, The room keeps the garbage from blowing around, and the dogs from getting to it. They pick it up once a week and hose the place down. By the end of the week it gets pretty gamy but it is far enough from anything to bother anyone, and it keeps the place clean. If every area had a similar set up there would be no need for people to burn or throw on the side of the road.

IMO standardised  covered containers like they have in many countries that a truck could pick up dump in it back and place back in a couple of minutes would be better and easier to handle, but it would require a higher tax base to finance.

I think it is inevitable that such a system will eventually be implemented.
