A vagrant who is suspected of eating a large quantity of preserved eggs washed down with many bottles of soda was found dead near the shop where he had had his last nighttime meal.

Lt-Col Phairat Khong-iang of the Ban Wisai Neua police in Chumphon southern Thailand received a report at 6.50 am that a man was dead by the side of the Asia Highway.

Forensic teams found the 50-55 year old man half on the hard shoulder and half in the bushes.

There was no ID. In his backpack were five unopened bottles of carbonated beverage, some instant noodles and an empty water bottle.

There were no signs of foul play and the unidentified man who had been dead for about 3-4 hours was taken away for a formal autopsy.

The cops made some inquiries in the locality and spoke to Ladda, 55, the owner of a shop 50 meters away who was in an agitated state.

She said that between 3 and 4 am she heard someone moving about in her shop along with the clinking sound of glass bottles. As she was alone she decided not to confront the person who was there.

When daylight came it emerged that the person had opened and consumed 10 bottles of soda and nine "yiaw maa" or preserved eggs.

The shells were all over the floor.

Police put two and two together and on this occasion made four.

Sanook reported that they reckoned the hobo was the thief and had died from overeating.

Anyone else notice she didn't bother to call police to report a burglary in progress?  I take it the police are a pay-to-play organization in her town.
