Thai cops struggling under debt totalling Bt270bn, says police chief

Thai police officers owe a total of Bt270 billion in debts, national police chief Suwat Jangyodsuk revealed on Friday.

 

Suwat told Thansettakij newspaper that around 209,000 officers had taken loans to support their family or to purchase large items such as cars or houses.

 

The police chief said he has asked Krungthai Bank and the Government Savings Bank to suspend debt payments.

 

He is also seeking ways of generating more revenue for his subordinates. One idea is to set up a market for police spouses to run businesses. Another is to look at assets confiscated by the Anti-Money Laundering Office.

 

He added that he has contacted corporations to request scholarships for police officers’ children.

 

Suwat also pledged to give a live internet broadcast explaining the police force’s mission and allow members of the public to question him in real time.

 

“I will not hide anything and am ready for all questions,” he said.

Of course! Normal people's possessions will be repossessed if they don't pay but the Police should be exempt?

When you cannot afford to take out a loan you shouldn't.  Why would anyone bail out an individual for taking a loan on a car?

The Fines i have paid in my time here have probably paid for a few beers or whiskeys,but never a ticket was given, i just paid at the spot as asked...

Oh no... day light robbery as businesses are stripped of assets...  “Sorry, we thought it was money laundering... no we don’t know where all your assets ended up” 

 

 

Simple Answers:  There are too many police who do nothing, and those who could do something don’t because the system makes them lazy and they are not paid enough. 

 

Cut the numbers, raise the standards, pay them more, get them to actually police rather than do <deleted> all except direct a bit of traffic at rush hour.

Why?  And for who, I wonder? Perhaps the odd mia noi here and there?  Do they teach Thai students when they go thru the school system about the importance of saving for the future and living within your means?   No need to answer that question...

Again why?  Are the government owned banks being asked to suspend debt repayments for other Thai citizens?  Strange, I haven't heard of Thai policemen being thrown out of work and unemployed like has happened with restaurant, hotel, bar, transit, tourism workers...

I kinda had the feeling that the local police already have the custom of doing more than just looking at assets confiscated by AMLO.

They certainly require decent pay and the wherewithal to acquire uniforms and equipment.

 

If that is not provided then Thailand will continue to operate along the the lines of the franchise system in Mughal India in about 1600 AD.

Don't the cops here get preferential loan rates on mortgages same as teachers do? Aren't the cops eligible for government housing too?  Do they really need luxury cars and mansions let alone mia nois?

One of the groups that still have a job in these COVID times, and probably lots of overtime.

 

The car and house finance was probably taken on pre-covid when no one could foresee how it would hit their pockets and earning opportunities.

 

But wow! What an idea! Take the proceeds of AML confiscations and instead of using it to finance the government, use it to pay off BIB personal loans. What could go wrong there?

Uniforms and equipment and beiing selected on merit and not on how much you have to spend to buy your posting..

 

In short,a modern police force and not one operating on the franchise system run by the Ottoman and Mughal empires of the 16th century.

 

All this should be readily apparent to even the dullest observer..
