I am an old man (76), and I am at home, which is rural Kamphaeng Phet.

I don't watch tv as I have better things to do.

I quit smoking 50 odd years ago and I quit alcohol 1st June 2020 to give my body a rest after 60 years of drinking alcohol.

The last time I was in Pattaya was about 5 years ago and I bought a motor bike.

I spend my time with my Thai family here and have plenty of things to do to keep me out of mischief and Pattaya.

Good for you....... Exactly what a senior gentleman should be doing.......... Good luck, careful on the motorbike.....   ( I was refering to senior gentlemen in uniform )    SHhhhhhhhh.....

Actually I have little idea how they are doing, but thought it was worse than Pattaya. Yes I could look in the specific forum but I fear turning to stone with my finger on the mouse as if I had looked at the head of Medussa.

It’s very simple, in terms of tourism Hua Hin is seen an extension of Bangkok, Pattaya is not. You simply cannot compare as both locations were established for completely different reasons, one was set up for American sex pests, the other was established for the Bangkok elites, with a big royal influence.

Thais were vacationing in Hua Hin long before Gi Joe was hitting the bars on Pattaya beach road. Even to this day many Bangkok Thais barely recognise Pattaya as an existence, its a place north of Rayong where foreigners go, a place where the poor Isaan girls go to sell their body’s to support their families, it has no identity.

Not suggesting Hua Hin is better, I like both, just saying Pattaya will die long before Hua Hin will.

once vaccines are rolled out and quarantine ended some will return for a holiday, but then there is always the fear of a new lockdown and being trapped, and what will tourists come back too.Places like pattaya, patong and chaweng on Samui are mothballed and i cant see these places being dusted off, cleaned, and reopened on the basis of a few planeloads coming in.

It will for sure be a "chicken and egg" situation, and will also depend partly on what each individual comes to Thailand for.

If you're looking for deserted beaches it could be great, other than that, from what I'm seeing here and on other forums, despite many closures, Pattaya is struggling on....so far!

We are most definitely in a "wait and see" situation.

Falang keeping the city going?

is that why 80 percent of the business are closed?

nothing there but old broke cheap Charlie’s, that why they want the Chinese back!

Wot you on about lad.?

The place was built on farang tourists and the reason 80% of the businesses are closed is that there are very few here now.

Old possibly, broke not really, and not necessarily Cheap Charlies (no apostrophe in a plural) but long stay visitors who keep the remaining businesses going.

Yes the Chinese will be back the same as everyone else and Pattaya will keep evolving and changing.

You’re being too analytical.  Some of us were born on the mean streets and are street smart as a result. Others have led a more sheltered life - let’s just leave it there.

Thank you for the "street smart " advice but I'll make that decision myself, OK?

I was wondering how it is right now under Covid rather than going into a history lesson. But it was pretty dead when I went there some years back. It seemed to be there solely to entertain Scandinavians hiding from the cold. Might as well been on the Costa Brava.

Why would anyone want to pay for 1,000 baht for photos when you can buy the real thing for 700 or less? And online porn is free! ????

Exactly, some idiot is paying for it, it's like buying lady drinks online you can see the video's on YT

Some years ago I installed the WeChat app on my phone because of the amount of Chinese guest we were getting it seems like they all use it, obviously now there is no Chinese guest coming but it's full of Thai freelancers I must get 2 or 3 a day contacting me,

I didnt want to un install the app as it still have previous guest contact details.

And you dont think landlords are more than happy to keep raising the price when a booming is going on?........Look no further than Sihanoukville were rents went up X5  X10 and left many Cambodians homeless...

I agree 100%! They take advantage of, dual price, cheat, rob and scam foreigners every chance they get. I have absolutely NO SYMPATHY ????

The expats have always thought they were high and mighty, that Thailand couldn’t go on without them!  That they drove the economy, nothing could be more false. Falang are not welcome here, especially the falang in pattaya, and what they portray there, it’s fact.

Chinese and Indians is what they want.

the falang doesn’t contribute all that much.

At the moment they are contributing a lot more to Pattaya than the Chinese, Indians or even Russians. Though doubtless these have all contributed more to making Pattaya a family resort.

I have never met any who thought they drove the Thai economy.

I think Pattaya has begun to attract more folks from Bangkok the past 7 or 8 years.  The Lumpini developer kicked things off with its massive Lumpini Park Beach and Lumpini Seaview projects in Jomtien, followed up with two other very big projects in Wong Amat/Naklua.  Sansiri saw Lumpini's success and arrived with Baan Plai Haad and The Base, SC Asset with Centric Sea, Supalai with Supalai Mare, and Raimon Land with Zire and Unixx.  These added to smaller, older projects already here, especially in Wong Amat and points south, that have lots of Bangkok owners.

Many of the buyers for these new condos were Bangkokians buying weekend getaway places.  The Base was actually almost fully booked with Bangkok buyers before the sales office even opened in Pattaya.   My partner and I met a number of Bangkokians when we lived at Park Beach--the condos on either side of us were owned by Bangkokians.  During the week the place was pretty deserted--even though it has 1800 units.  But, very busy on long holiday weekends.

That's quite catchy, maybe the Tourism Authorities could adopt that as a worldwide advertising campaign. ????

The place would be heaving in no time.

Joint poster of the year I think.

Agreed.  I am looking to rent (a house) long-term.  It should be a buyers' market but daily I see ludicrous prices being asked. Rather than suffer a loss of 'face', landlords would suffer months of no income.

thai way! perfect analogy. losing face vs losing income

You heard anything about The Edge?

I was told it was almost sold out pre build. They took down the 3.9 mil sale sign for several months and replaced it with a higher price.  Now, I see that old price sign is back up.

Recently was told many Chinese have backed out.

you may have to wait a long time..Some western countries still have no plan to provide vaccination to their citizens living or stuck abroad.  Unless the last Thai citizen in Thailand is vaccinated(which makes sense), Thai govt probably wont vaccinate any farang tourist, legal or illegally staying

I haven't heard anything but I wouldn't be surprised if some buyers have backed out.
