Does it not show astonishing generosity of spirit (if not naivety) to consider that a gambling institution organised and controlled by government officials will lead to less extortion, bribery and mafia activity? As gambling and very large quantities of cash will be involved. the safest bet to place would be that will be no transparent audit arrangements, and the amount of revenue generated, and where it goes, will remain unknown - no doubt for reasons of "national security"; which will also, quite justifiably, mean that it will fall under the jurisdiction of the police or military. That will be an entertaining fight to watch, and maybe place a bet on! Edited February 8, 2021 by herfiehandbag

Rancid
I'm not really sure what the governments attitude to casinos is as opposed the public, but would imagine it could prove very lucrative to the bureaucrats in charge. Now of course we have the tourist industry on its knees due to lock downs and fear, with certain bar cities all but wiped out, it does offer a good excuse to bring in casinos to "save Pattaya/Phuket and bring back employment". aussienam
Casinos are a nice formal way of laundering money from the proceeds of crime IMO. Dirty money always makes its way there. Of course the illegal casinos are a problem, but this legitimises and allows big players of cartels to put their launderers to work and have all those receipts/chips/CCTV to 'verify' their wealth. As.is the case in Cambodia (documentary on it), the casinos will increase cartel/mafia presence. Hand in hand with that are abductions, kidnappings, murders, shootings, etc. Then of course gambling addictions, debt, family conflict, alcohol abuse, suicide. Also, the hoards of well heeled Chinese and those 'employed' to dump cash in the tables, arriving on apparent 'gambling holidays' will push out other local operators as the casino scourge eats up domestic real estate. Westerners and others not here to gamble will find the transition to casino towns, means having to move on. I suspect Pattaya and other tourist towns will be targets. PumpkinEater
No to Casinos in Thailand! Legalize Weed it will suppress the traffic accidents (slow people down:)) Unless the Government implements a nationwide media campaign on the effects of gambling addiction, like they do with the fear of Covid, keep gambling out of Thailand. The long term ill effects of PM 2.5 cannot even be publicly addressed properly, and now they want to bankrupt the Thais with addiction? If a person has the money to gamble,...a short 2 hour flight to Singapore (after the pandemic) could easily be paid for by such an individual. Cheers!
