Pattaya has loads of potential. If they'd sort out the water quality and generally tidy up the place a bit then it could be awesome.

I wouldn't want it totally sterile like Singapore, so maybe leave 50% of the sleaze and get rid of the other half and replace it with some decent quality restaurants and midrange, non sex related bars along the waterfront instead of endless massage shops and tacky beer bars. Move all the red light stuff to the second road so the old mongers and wannabe hardmen that generally frequent/own the bars are out of view.

Educate the locals to treat the tourists with a bit of respect and have proper punishments for any thugs caught robbing or beating tourists.

I'm thinking a sleazy version of Bondi beach (without the surf). Not perfect, but a massive improvement on the current cesspit.

I'll have some of what he's smoking please, but diluted by half. I want to get buzzed, not braindead.

I would be happy if they started to find a way to treat the human faeces from Koh Larn before it enters the sea (and if through some kind of liquidation), which much of the time have a tendency to arrive at Songtarn beach, in more or less recognisable state - all depending on prevailing wind direction, and how powerful the waves are on a given day (heavier waves = smaller bits). Especially during times when the the swimming pools in the condos are locked, and in order to keep us health swimmers safe from infection, I hear.

Pattaya Mayor Sonthaya Khunplume has revealed ambitious plans to transform the resort into a truly world class tourist destination, on a par with the likes of Dubai, Singapore and Miami.

Speaking to Sophon Cable TV on Tuesday, Mr Sonthaya said that the project to develop the resort (dubbed Neo Pattaya) will play an important role in the Eastern Economic Corridor, which aims to spur business, investment and development throughout the eastern seaboard.

When tourism finally resumes, more quality tourists, generating even more income will visit the resort, Mr Sonthaya predicted.

Eventually, Pattaya will become not only a better place for tourists, but will be much improved for people living and working in the city.

The mayor cited Singapore, Dubai and Miami as examples for Pattaya to follow in its bid to become a world class resort, which eventually would include an exciting nightlife, lots of activities for families and a diverse economy.

The mayor added that Old Town Naklua, Koh Larn, Bali Hai Pier, Khao Thap Phraya, Pattaya Beach Walk and Jomtien Beach have all been earmarked for redevelopment, in addition to the upgrades planned for Walking Street.

The news comes as local officials and business leaders, including the mayor himself, were told Pattaya must end its reliance on foreign tourism.

The models cited in the OP were tourists spots long before Covid 19 struck. This pandemic, like others in the past, will make a difference and Thailand had better understand that. This pandemic, unlike the others, has arrived in a time of growing concerns on Global Warming as well as global instability and threats of war. Okay, perhaps that sounds a bit excessive but the days of finding some far away paradise are gone and imo there is worse to come. No i'm not religious! Thailand, stop dreaming of building places for people that don't exist anymore...build for the rich maybe but be truthful enough to say so. The 'ordinary' person now has new priorities and a 'new Pattaya' will probably be too expensive for them to think about.
