U.S. lawmakers will set up commission to probe Jan. 6 attack on Capitol: Pelosi

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Monday lawmakers will establish an outside, independent commission to review the “facts and causes” related to the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump.

Pelosi said in a letter to lawmakers that the commission would be modeled on a similar one convened after the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on New York and the Pentagon. Pelosi said the panel will also look at the “facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other federal, state, and local law enforcement.”

She has tasked retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Russel Honoré with assessing security needs of the Capitol in the aftermath of the attack. Based on his interim findings, she said Congress must allocate additional funds “to provide for the safety of members and the security of the Capitol.”

She added: “It is clear from his findings and from the impeachment trial that we must get to the truth of how this happened.”

More than a month after the attack that left five dead as pro-Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol and sought to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s victory as president, the Capitol complex remains guarded by more than 5,000 National Guard troops and ringed with eight-foot fences rimmed with razor wire. The troops are expected to remain through mid-March.

Last month, the U.S. Capitol Police head urged lawmakers to add permanent fencing and back-up security, noting a 2006 security assessment recommended installation of a permanent perimeter fence around the Capitol.

Many lawmakers and Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser have urged congressional leaders not to adopt permanent fencing or permanent military security.

More than 200 people have been charged with federal crimes in the bloody assault on Congress, which led to Trump’s impeachment trial on a charge of inciting insurrection. Trump was acquitted on Saturday on a vote of 57-43, as seven Republican senators joined Democrats in favor of conviction, though short of the required majority.

We get it, you don’t want her to do her job, as it means investigating the former so-called president who coincidentally spend too much time with his hobby.

  • Nancy seriously needs a hobby.

  • Most know the truth of the Jan 6 insurrection and majority want Trump convicted. Most also know that the acquittal was partisan and phony. Only those guilty will fear the commission.

Maybe we will find out that this attack was well planed in advance. Who knows if there is Republicans on the Probe team we just might learn something.

I hope the commission will find out whether Trump’s campaign funds were indeed channeled to the rally organizers as alleged. That will be explosive and embarrassing for the Reps in the commission.

The GOP investigated Benghazi 10 times over 4 years. An invasion of the Capitol building and an attempt to kill members of Congress deserve at least the same.

It was only a violent insurrection that threatened the lives of every member of Congress and the Vice President.  No big deal, right?

Let hope Rand Paul will be equally enthusiatic in this probe as he was in the Benghazi's investigation.

Pelosi says independent commission will examine Capitol riot

Sen. Bill Cassidy, one of the few GOP senators with anything resembling a spine:

"“There should be a complete investigation about what happened,” said Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, one of seven Republicans who voted to convict Trump. “What was known, who knew it and when they knew, all that, because that builds the basis so this never happens again.”

Cassidy said he was “attempting to hold President Trump accountable,” and added that as Americans hear all the facts, “more folks will move to where I was.”"

If all the facts come out then fair enough. But will they?

Probably not, the GOP will do their best to make sure of that.

Anything "judicial" or "quasi judicial" such as as this proposed commission is compromised by the politicisation of the judiciary in the United States. The party managers will lay down the party line, and their members in various positions will follow it. The truth will not feature.

There are times when , although quaint and antediluvian, it is jolly handy to have a head of state who is not a political appointment - it can mean that those whose allegiance is to said head of state are not beholden to the political machinery! Perhaps the UK and the Dominion of Canada could lend you a "Royal Commission"?

I now sit back and await the howls...

You mean those facts that the various Trump team lawyers failed to produce for the courts? Or the allegations that earned the judges' ridicule? Including judges appointed by Trump?

As I said, I mean all the facts. This commission should investigate all aspects, including all actors.

As far as the Trump team lawyers go, as far as I saw, they succeeded in demonstrating that the House impeachment managers provided no direct evidence of guilt but did show that some of the 'evidence' provided was selectively edited or even false. And that was the end of that.

I have to admit I am very frustrated that the republicans are holding back all the evidence they have of voter fraud.....I can't understand why they are doing that!
