Speaking of normal, this photo was taken yesterday in Phitsanulok.

  • Agree totally with the above comments.  Buddhism in Thailand is used selectively as a stick to beat people with; but studiously ignored when the scent of baht is in the air.

  • Jeez, here we go again. More moralistic outrage from the conservative minority. No doubt someone wearing a yellow tie will pop up and talk about offense to the nation.

Ms Yuriar is listed as as an animal and nature lover in promo material.

I'm an animal. Do I qualify for her care and concern?

It's a good thing that Thailand is a Buddhist nation in name only, otherwise the PM would be sending his submarine to threaten Mexico.

She didn't mean to insult Buddhists she and her photogs are ignorant.I have called out westerners use as decorations and worse they don't understand and get defensive. Supposedly a real Buddha bar exists in Tokyo where you can get pearls of wisdom from Japanese Buddhist priests with your alcoholic libations, in moderation. Has a letter of  complaint been sent to the Ambassador? So much from the latest outrage. This "beauty" will get an education when she comes to Thailand.

perve on (one) To give one lewd, suggestive, and unwelcome looks or remarks. Some guy keeps coming around and perving on us—I'm going to go tell the bouncer. " Stop perving on that group of girls, Mike."

Thailand.... Land of hypocrisy, intolerant/old school and fake smiles

This type of people should be banned from entering Thailand for not respecting local culture.

 - Salma Hayek and her Snake worship scene is a hard act to follow...

Are you really so ignorant of Thailand's history and culture that you sexualize an innocent image and interpret it from the sexually screwed up mindset of a farang? Have you not made an effort to understand the local historical culture?  Long before Europeans with their repressed and deviant sexual mores arrived in Asia, Africa and the South Pacific, the locals went around topless. Female breasts were not sexual objects as they were in Christian countries.   In plain language, that is an image common of ancient Siam and features a woman of some wealth.

boobs-2

Above is mural paintings inside Wat Kaew, Chiang Rai. This is how women dressed in old Siam.

It is not pornography. Topless women were common up until the 1930's.

What the Mexican woman did was wrong because she sexualized a religious icon. It is no different than defiling  religious imagery and symbols of the Christian faith. The Mexican government would have been up in arms if she had posed lustfully with  a larger than life size religious icon of the Church of Rome.

I take it you also are against pictures of Muhammad? PBUH ???? Pretty much the same. I also don't think you can assume the Mexican GOV would do as you say. Maybe their society has matured enough for it to not be that big of an issue?

Yeah I think they could have made a smarter choice for a photo but maybe it was an honest mistaken. Misunderstanding?

I used to be a Zen monk in the past.  Buddhism is not a RELIGION, but a path to realisation.  the fact that it became a religion, and that Buddha became a 'God' offends his memory.

Yes, penises in Asia can be objects of religious worship. I was very surprised the first time I saw a shrine with penises. Now I just take it for granted! Lol

Or maybe she’s canny enough to know the old Hollywood maxim “There is no such thing as bad publicity”.

With absolutely nothing to do with Buddhism, but then Thai Buddhism is so far removed from Buddha's philosophy it's out of sight.

I encourage all my ladies to walk about naked. They are only too happy to oblige.

Just have to use some charm. Comes easily for me; being French.

OMG I am appalled! ????

But I guess they dress more modest in the Red Light District's... ????

It is so lucky that Siam before 1935 had no way to insult the Buddhist hierarchy......

It obviously was. She clearly had no intention to offend Thais or Thailand. Rather, the opposite. In fact we can see that she's very excited about travelling to Thailand and wanted to relate to something she could  find that looked Thai-ish in Mexico. There isn't much. What was she supposed to do, pose in front of a plate of Mexican style pad Thai?

These Phallic symbols of fertility, go hand in hand with honouring the sacred images and statues of Buddha.

Any one who does not know and honour the Buddhist tradition should avoid commenting on them.

Presumably this guy is qualified to comment?

'Consumerism is now the Thai religion,” said Phra Paisan Visalo, one of the country’s most respected monks.'
