Health minister upset at being accused of lying by Thanathorn

Thailand’s Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul says he is disappointed with Progressive Movement leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit for his use of outdated information, about the Public Health Ministry’s COVID-19 vaccine procurement plan, to attack him and accuse him lying.

In his Facebook post today (Saturday), under the title “Who lies to the People?” the minister said he was invited into the“Clubhouse” app on Friday night for a discussion about COVID-19 vaccines.

He said the discussion was constructive, with participants expressing divergent views and thoughts, and he responded to several questions, talking about how the ministry has managed to procure the vaccines and its vaccination plan.

A Nut in's own words - “How could a deputy prime minister lie to the people?”

Answer - with a straight face.

Easily without any effort...

By moving his lips?

But I feel like the failures in the vaccination "plan" are down to basic incompetence rather than prevarication. They simply don't know what they're doing.

Thai people lie, it's an essential part of the culture and, therefore it seems reasonable to assume that they're lying whenever they say anything. That is certainly my assumption and assuming that they are mendacious has never led me into error. So far. Thais will lie about anything. Big, small, important, not important, the only things that really matter are the requirements of the moment. If a lie serves the purpose of the moment, then they will lie. If a lie saves them face then they will lie, in fact, if a lie serves a greater purpose than the truth does, then they will lie. It's not a complicated concept, in Thailand, the truth serves no purpose apart from satisfying the needs of the moment. The truth has no particular merit and from that position, it is but a short step to other, greater crimes. If you need any explanation of that comment, turn on your TV and spend a couple of pleasant hours looking at the Thai news.

Correct. If there are 15 ways to sod something up, call in a Thai, then there will be seventeen.

This weekend private hospitals reported they had been told that getting approval for "other vaccines" might take 90 days. Jesus wept. That seems to indicate they know exactly what they are doing and why. This is going to be a long hot season BTW.

from the article:

"Although most participants did not know one another, Anutin said that they showed mutual respect and the conversation went smoothly, until Thanathorn joined and the atmosphere started to change."

It went from "greng jai (entitled deference)" to "jep hua (head ache)"

very simple really,  you tell when a thai politican is lying, their lips are moving

"......he maintained that 60 million doses of vaccines will be administered to Thai people within this year."

I really hope that will happen but the rate at which the authorities have been able to administer their supplies of the Sinovac vaccine suggests there will have to be a huge ramping up of their logistical ability and that there are no delays in the domestic supply chain that has yet to come online.

I chalk it up to cultural differences: here making the other person feel comfortable is more important than truth. We do it in the west too: "Yes, those pants do make your butt look big"... try that truth some time and see how it goes. Not as much as here, but there are times when white lies are acceptable and expected.

Lie detectors, body/facial language "readings" don't work so well here as there is no underlying discomfort of feeling they've done something wrong, unlike Western cultures. Compound that with the more subtle dance in communication here "I know you're lying, you know you are, this is to save face, and I will act according to my 'read' of the subtext...". We westerners seem naive and unsophisticated in our expectations for truth.

I would replace the word 'Fascinating' with 'Deplorable' !

Largely agreed, and only disagree in unimportant points. Well said; and yes, one underestimates the cultural divide at one's peril. therefore a large and very black lie does not carry with it quite the opprobrium that one might expect. Cultural differences.

Off on a bit of a tangent, I chanced to watch, on the computer a few days ago, the behaviour of a family of monkeys. Small apes, macaques or some such. not the big ones in this case. I was struck by the appearance of their eating habits, their grooming habits, their behaviour with their young and their behaviour in a social context, when seen 'ín the wild'.  I was struck by their cultural norms (yes, even lower order animals have them) and their similarity to... never mind... straying. Topic creep.

Yes. me too. Personally I find the Thai culture to be similar to the Thai everything: primitive and repulsive. I have already signalled my refusal to become more adoptive with it among family and friends. If they want to eat rats and bugs, let them eat rats and bugs so the SIno-Thai pooyay can maximise profits at their direct expense. If they want to shout instead of having a conversation, then let them rant, just don't buy them any more phones because they don't need a phone when they can have a 200-metre conversation instead. if they want to be all 'lair, liar, pants on fire', then let them. Just so long as they don't expect me to get involved in finding excuses for what is plainly bad behaviour- even if it's within their cultural norms. Anthrologists may argue that human development relies upon cultural exchange and mutation. Thais have (in my opinion) copied everything that is worthwhile in Thai society from foreigners, all the while pretending that isn't what they have done at all, but increasingly they are not being believed when that's what they pretend to do. As one of their shibboleths is reputed to have said long ago: "take everything from the foreigner, and give nothing back". As I recall the story it was soon after thousands of zebra crossings were painted on Thai roads, with Thai motorists never being told they were expected to stop and let pedestrians cross the road safely. The consequence is that they need not have bothered because nobody stops and nothing is done about it when they don't, even when pedestrians are killed by yahoos on motorcycles.

Hey ho.

Surely Anutin has to go to court now.....that is his only defense.....

If it falls to me to start a fight to cut out the cancer of bent and twisted journalism in our country with the simple sword of truth and the trusty shield of British fair play, so be it. I am ready for the fight. The fight against falsehood and those who peddle it. My fight begins today. Thank you and good afternoon
