(Reuters) - Myanmar's ruling military junta warned on Friday that pro-democracy protesters risked being shot in the head or back as activists called for a huge show of defiance against the generals on the country's Armed Forces Day on Saturday.

Troops killed four more people in demonstrations on Friday, adding to a reported death toll of more than 320 people in the crackdown that has followed the coup against Aung San Suu Kyi's elected government on Feb. 1.

A broadcast on the state MRTV news channel said: "You should learn from the tragedy of earlier ugly deaths that you can be in danger of getting shot to the head and back".

The warning did not specifically say that security forces had been given shoot-to-kill orders, and the junta has previously tried to suggest that some fatal shootings have come from within the crowds of protesters.

But it indicated that the military was determined to prevent any disruptions around Armed Forces Day.

And in a week that saw international pressure on the junta ramped up with new U.S. and European sanctions, Russia offered support for the military and said it wanted to strengthen ties.

Protesters have taken to the streets almost daily since the coup which derailed Myanmar's slow transition to democracy.

Demonstrations took place across the country again overnight and on Friday, including in Mandalay and Sagaing regions, as well as Karen and Chin states, media reports said.

Security forces opened fire on protesters waving black flags in the southern town of Myeik, a witness said.

"Two were killed by head shots," the witness told Reuters. "We cannot pick up the (third) dead body as many security forces are there".

Another witness said he had seen a fourth body. Myanmar Now news said four people were killed in the town.

At least 320 protesters have been killed in the weeks of unrest as of Thursday night, according to figures from the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) activist group.

Its data shows that at least 25% of those died from shots to the head, raising suspicions they were deliberately targeted for killing.

Reuters could not independently verify the numbers killed.

A military spokesman did not respond to calls seeking comment.

The United Nations' special envoy on Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, said the military had turned against its own citizens.

"Women, youth and children have been among those killed," she said in a statement.

U.S. Ambassador Thomas Vajda and his wife placed a wreath in front of a school in the commercial capital Yangon where a protester was shot and killed last month.

"We honour the memory of all those who have lost their lives since the February 1 coup," the embassy said in a Twitter post.

Half an hour later, troops took the wreath away, witnesses said.

STRATEGIC ALLY

While Western powers have condemned the coup and the crackdown, Russia said it wanted to strengthen ties with the Myanmar military.

Russian deputy defence minister Alexander Fomin met junta leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing on Friday and said Myanmar was a reliable ally and strategic partner of Moscow, Tass news agency reported.

Footage of the meeting on MRTV showed the two men inspecting a table displaying shields, motorcycle helmets and unlit petrol bombs purportedly used by demonstrators.

Defence ties between Russia and Myanmar have grown in recent years with Moscow providing training to thousands of soldiers as well as selling arms to the military.

Moscow's support for the junta is also important as it is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and along with China, which has also refrained from criticism, can block potential U.N. actions.

The visit took place after the United States, Britain and the European Union imposed new sanctions on groups and individuals linked to the coup.

The World Bank on Friday slashed its forecast for Myanmar's economy to a 10% contraction in 2021 from the growth expected previously.

'WAR HAS NOT ENDED'

In Mandalay, groups of monks wearing robes and anti-coronavirus facemasks held candles and stood in a protest vigil outside the Moe Kaung and Masoeyain monasteries after dark.

About 100 people beating drums held a protest in the downtown Sule area of Yangon before being chased away by security forces, witnesses said.

Organisers have called for widespread protests on Saturday, observed as Armed Forces Day and commemorating the start of the military's resistance to Japanese occupation in 1945.

Authorities freed about 300 protesters on Friday who had been detained in Yangon, witnesses and news reports said. About 1,000 have previously been freed from a total of about 3,000 arrested, the AAPP has said.

However, Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's most popular civilian politician, remains in detention at an undisclosed location. Many other figures in her National League for Democracy are also being held in custody.

The military says it acted because the NLD's victory in an election last November was marred by fraud - an assertion rejected by the electoral commission and many foreign governments.

It has placed the country under a state of emergency and said it will organise a new election, though it has not set a date.

It has to be wondered about that Russia would come out in support of the military and thus against the vast majority of other nations. Perhaps a petulant and callous demonstration in reaction to the US and EU hardening of attitude to themselves?

Or as so many times before will the validity of the critics eventually be compromised by revelations of interference and subversion that precipitated events?

Can it be ignored that a geographically significant  member of the " Quad" is central to the geopolitical declarations of intent?

The actions of the Burmese military are criminal, immoral and inexcusable. All of those guiding, undertaking and financing  these murders of innocent civilians should be charged and judged at the International  criminal court in  the Hague.

Anything less is a travesty of justice.

A soldier is someone's son or daughter. I wonder how they would feel if they knew they had shot a relative. They certainly would not be able to go home after the Army had finished with them.

Yes indeed. I made a similar comment about soldiers possibly killing their family members back in 2014 when Junta General Prayut staged his coup - the comment was censored and removed!!

Yes, International Travellers: Come to Thailand!

They're just legally killing (via firearms and black rifles) Men women and Children across the way in Burma!

Military coups and protests in Thailand?

Not a chance of that happening here.

Besides, we only use water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets on our indidineant populous..... and they're mostly, only students.

You'll be fine, we promise!

Come spend money and invest!

Uh huh.....

nobody knows.  the numbers could be 10,000.  probably started in 2009...nobody knows.  we rely on the "media" to tell us the "truth."

and then we bash the countries who actually report the facts and give much more accurate information.

These so called soldiers (cowards) are nothing more than a drunken mob of thugs with guns

who do as they please knowing they won't be brought to account while the military has the power.

As for Russia and China, they have an agenda of stopping democracy from spreading full stop.
