BANGKOK (NNT) - Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, will inspect the readiness of a section of a motorway linking Bang Pa-in district in Ayutthaya province and Nakhon Ratchasima province today (Apr 7), with increased interprovincial travel expected during the Songkran holiday. The Department of Highways has reported that all costs related to land expropriation have been paid, with exception of a few people who filed an appeal.

Government Spokesman, Anucha Burapachaisri, said today that the Department of Highways is working in accordance with the policy and instructions of the Prime Minister. The department is constructing Motorway 6, or M6, linking Bang Pa-in and Nakhon Ratchasima in the northeastern region, to facilitate travelers and ensure their safety. The M6 project is to open officially in 2023. Construction of some sections of the motorway, including a route connecting Pak Chong and Sikhiu districts of Nakhon Ratchasima, is now complete. The government will allow people to use the motorway free of tolls during Songkran, from April 9 to 19, to ease traffic congestion on Mittraphap Road, which averages 200,000 cars a day during holidays. The Prime Minister will preside over the opening of the Pak Chong - Sikhiu section.

Concerning compensation for land expropriation, Secretary-General of the Association to Protect the Thai Constitution (APTC), Srisuwan Janya, said today the Ministry of Transport has not compensated all landowners. A complaint has been filed with the Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Saksayam Chidchob, to expedite the process before some sections of the motorway open during Songkran. Otherwise, the association will submit a complaint to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) or ask the Administrative Court to suspend the order to open the motorway.

Director-General of the Department of Highways, Sarawut Songwilai, said there are 5,238 people whose land has been expropriated, and all of them were compensated between 2016 and 2020. However, a few people filed appeals with the Ministry of Transport, asking the ministry to consider raising the level of compensation. The ministry considered their appeals, announced its resolution, and started paying additional compensation last year. However, at present 361 people have not yet received additional compensation, worth 415 million baht in total, and the Department of Highways is to speed up the payments. Mr. Sarawut said the APTC Secretary-General was probably referring to this group of people who filed an appeal.
