The fifth day of Thailand’s so-called ‘7 dangerous days’ saw 37 people killed and 328 people injured from 330 road accidents in Thailand, officials said on Thursday.

The figures for 14 April raise the total number of deaths and injuries during the first five days of Songkran to 192 killed and 1,818 injured from 1,795 accidents.

The stats released by the Center for the Prevention and Reduction of Road Accidents found that most accidents on Thursday were caused by speeding (33.55%), drink driving (31.52%) and cutting across lanes (19.09%)

Just under 86 percent of all accidents involved a motorcycle, while trucks and cars accounted for 5.90% and 3.24% of accidents, respectively.

Most accidents occurred between 4pm and 8pm and the highest number of injuries and fatalities on Wednesday involved those aged between 30 and 39.

Police said 71,889 drivers face prosecution, with 18,998 found to not have a driving license and 17,599 were not wearing helmets.

On Wednesday, Prachuap Khiri Khan reported the highest number of accidents (12), while the province with the highest number of fatalities was Pathum Thani (4). Kanchanaburi, Tak and Nakhon Si Thammarat  reported the largest number of injuries with 13 each.

Over the five days, Nakhon Sri Thammarat has reported the most accidents with 76, followed by Chiang Mai (63), Songkhla (49) and Surat Thani (49).

Bangkok, Khon Kaen and PathumThani have reported the most deaths with 8 each.

15 provinces have reported zero deaths.

On average, between 50 and 60 people are killed on Thailand’s roads each day.

The Songkran festival is notorious for a spike in deaths and accidents on the roads.

However, this year's stats seem much lower when compared to 2019, pre COVID-19 lockdown.

And the real big travel days are yet to come.  Be safe and drive with a high visual horizon folks.

Better still; stay off the roads !
