The World Health Organization (WHO) has granted emergency approval for a Covid vaccine made by Chinese state-owned company Sinopharm.

It is the first vaccine developed by a non-Western country to get WHO backing.

The vaccine has already been given to millions of people in China and elsewhere.

The WHO had previously only approved the vaccines made by Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna.

But individual health regulators in various countries - especially poorer ones in Africa, Latin America and Asia - have approved Chinese jabs for emergency use.

With little data released internationally early on, the effectiveness of the various Chinese vaccines has long been uncertain.

 

But the WHO on Friday said it had validated the "safety, efficacy and quality" of the Sinopharm jab developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Products.

The WHO said the addition of the vaccine had "the potential to rapidly accelerate Covid-19 vaccine access for countries seeking to protect health workers and populations at risk".

It is recommending that the vaccine be administered in two doses to those aged 18 and over.

A decision is expected in the coming days on another Chinese vaccine developed by Sinovac, while Russia's Sputnik vaccine is under assessment.

They're waiting for additional data from them before doing the certification.  Seems the same problem they have with the Russian jab.  Lack of clinical data.

Heard this allegations but have not seen much evidence and have quiet down by a fair lot since Jan 20. If compromised, Sinovac should be approved a long while ago. Sure you understand this simple logic.

500,000 doses of Sinovac are being donated by the Chinese government on condition that 100,000 of them are given to Chinese nationals in Thailand.  I don't see the British and US governments stepping up to the plate.

Still no progress report on the locally made AZ from Siam Bioscience & the pssibility of when & how much will be available.

I smell a rat here as if like everyrhing else they would be crowing about it but not a woed.

The 50million doses they proposed to manufacture this year is starting to sound like a pipe dream or have I missed a progress report ?

As a healthcare volunteer, wifey will go on Monday in a minibus with 9 others and get her first shot, so I said, 'so I might have to change my extension to a retirement one', ????  'mia pen ri tilak I have told the kids you can stay the house and get lady new  if you want.' ???? fingers crossed but not sure why.????

To be honest it seems this sudden ramp up in Sinovac is probably the prelude to an announcement that the June 6 milllion locally produced AZ will be delayed...Even if it was not delayed the going from nothing to 6 million in June, to 10 million thereafter seems quite ambitious. Hope i am wrong though.

The Astrazeneca vaccine is hard to make from what I am reading.  They need to grow a huge quantity of the the viral particle cells and it's kind of a black art. It takes about 8 weeks to grow a batch of those cells so that is probably why it is taking them so long to try ramp up.  Supposedly it only takes Pfizer a couple days to make the raw ingredient for the mRNA vaccines so that's why they have been able to ramp up much quicker.

 

If they are still struggling to ramp up AZ manufacturing in Europe they will for sure struggle with it in Thailand.
