BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) has reported that more than 23,000 empty containers have been returned to Thailand since February, enabling the export of 458,000 tons of products worth over 35 billion baht.

TCC vice chairman Phot Aramwattananont said the return of the empty containers has helped alleviate the shortage, which Thai exporters have been facing due to lockdown measures in some countries during the COVID-19 pandemic, which prevented cargo ships from returning with empty containers.

In December last year the government ordered the Marine Department to amend docking regulations, allowing cargo ships 300-400 metres long to dock in Thailand for up to two years, to attract vessel operators so they could return empty containers.

Mr. Phot said, since then, seven cargo ships of under 400 metres have docked at Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi, returning over 23,000 empty containers to Thai exporters, enabling the export sector to contribute to the nation’s economic growth during this time of crisis.

I work in a very big ( biggest ) chemical company , and in my production plant we are running all the chemicals i (we) make at +100% . I do hear the same at other places also and it even made it to the news items also . There is a huuuge demand which can't be followed , soon prices in shops will go up pretty big . Idk , but it looks right to me since we ( i mean my company , my production plant ) are going overdrive for months in a row already and we got problems to get basic stuff from outside the company ( like steel barrels ) . ATM the ask for basic products is higher then the producing side , it will create a shortage and rising prices ( inflation ) keep your eye out on it ....

I own an export company and the situation is as follows in my experience.  There are a lack of boxes in the east and consequently the rates to ship to Europe have reached as high as $10,000.  The rate I pay to ship to the Far East is apprx (it varies for each shipment ) is £2500  ( apprx $3500).

If they are desperate to get boxes back to the Far East and are already charging a premium East to west then why haven't the prices I pay dropped in Europe for return shipments?

Footnote.  The 'crisis' is winning over any economic growth in many sectors.

Ok they don't own the containers the various shipping companies do. More bs from the Thai government.  This has nothing to do with a lack of containers more a lack of berths at a port. F f  s

There is not a lack of boxes. There's a lack of release of said boxes a massive difference.  There is no lack of containers.
