Americans, what are must bring items to Thailand?

Featured Replies

I am arriving in Thailand on July 2 on the OA visa. What are some things that you bring to Thailand from the states because you can't find in Thailand?

surprisingly maybe, clothes.. I used to get really good deals on Hawaiian type shirts at Walmart in September clearance.. and the cheap boxer briefs that come in 3 packs.. which I prefer to the more expensive ones...

For some reason shaving cream and sunscreen can be rather expensive in LOS.  For example Edge Gel shaving cream is between $2 and $3 dollars in the US.  At the local supermarket a similar product goes for almost 300 Baht($9).  A few cans from Wal Mart could save you some money.  Also, if you like to wear hiking shoes or boots a good pair would be much cheaper in anywhere in the US.

Are those available in America? I though some Americans develop them only if they are long enough away from home.

Any types of snacks you like to eat, your meds and vitamins if you can get several months worth, and your bathroom supplies.  Razors and shaving cream here are a little bit more than in the states, but you can still source them here.  Most things can be bought here, or found on-line thru Shoppe or Lazada, just cost a bit more for those products

I'm a pretty normal sized guy but I agree that it's a lot easier to find properly fitting clothes in the US than in Thailand. Here are some other things to consider:

  • Make certain that you have your US banking/financial institutions setup for online access.
  • Keep a couple of US credit cards that don't have a foreign transaction fee. Some banks ask that you inform them when you're traveling overseas.
  • Retain a US mobile phone number (you can remove your SIM or turn it off when it's not needed) so you can receive SMS one time passwords related to the above.

If you have sensitive skin the local shaving cream causes some minor issues.  I guess one could use just soap and water....lol????

A Big C ( small, not the hypermarket ) near my home , sells shaving cream ( brand " Big C" ) 2 times cheaper than Gillette, and for me, quality is the same

for ear plugs, you find some in pharmacies or Taiwatasadu, orange color

Please bring some for me. Kirkland Signature Solid White Albacore Tuna in Water, 7 oz, 8 ct you $17.49 at Costco

DEET-based mosquito repellent.

Blistex.

If you take vitamins/supplements bring your favorites, the assortment and quality available here is disappointing.

If you use sunscreen bring it, most of the stuff out here has "skin whitener" in it.

Slightly off topic, if you're looking for a break from LOS while you're here, consider a trip to Malaysia and do some shopping there.  For some reason the Tesco stores in Malaysia have Tesco-brand items the ones in Thailand do not.  Or for an even longer "short trip" Australia, used to be some cheap flights.

If you have big feet you are out of luck with shoes here and any neighboring country.

Your wits. And, as an American planning to hang around on this forum, a thick skin.
