One to two billion Baht in revenue will be lost per day, resulting in an economic contraction of about 0.1%-0.3%, amid a new round of COVID-19 restrictions beginning today (Monday) in Bangkok and nine other provinces, according to the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

The restrictions should not last too long and an accelerated vaccination effort, especially in areas with many infections, should accompany the restrictive measures, said Commerce Chamber Chairman Sanan Angubolkul, who is also urging direct compensation be paid to businesses in the hospitality and food and beverage industries.

The one-month partial lockdown, in Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala and Songkhla, includes the re-imposition of the dine-in ban, no gatherings of more than 20 people, as well as closures of cinemas, theatres and the sealing of construction worker dormitories.

That's really cheered me up.  I was getting quite worried there for a moment.

Just a drop in the bucket to add onto the trillions already lost because of incompetence.

Why didn't they lockdown a month ago?

I wonder how many vaccines the country could have ordered just from the government revenue lost with this outbreak? If the people were vaccinated, they could already be seeing mass tourism from the US and Europe already.

Not opening the pocketbook has ironically cost them more they could have corruptly siphoned off in a more normal economy.

Really.. todays news says about 6 million, only 10% of the population has had it's first jab, with less than that 3% having the second... if that's accelerated I can't wait for it to take off.

The latest restrictions are great news....if you're Foodpanda or Grab.

NO restaurant has a 30% margin, so the usurious rates charged by those delivery companies (30-35%) guarantee yet more losses for the shops deciding to remain open. Maybe they can clear inventory before it goes bad, and maybe cover some variable costs, but it's a loss. Perhaps it's better to shut down, either turn in the keys or else simply pay rent and incur no other costs. Bangkok residents better ramp up their cooking skills.

Already Covid has claimed 50,000 eating establishments (including some street food vendors), and this third shutdown will claim many more. Likely that has put more than a million Thais into the ranks of the unemployed. Certainly the Bangkok sidewalks are getting quite crowded at night with folks living rough.

Had a chat today with a few Thai women who work in restaurants. They said they hate it when they hear 'some farang' say. "They can just go back to the provinces and eat rice from the family paddy". As these women explained, not everyone wants to live on just rice, not everyone has a paddy, and folks still have to pay for electricity, water, school fees, and things like shampoo, soap, etc. Even in the provinces life isn't free. Those 'farangs' tend to come from nations with extensive social safety nets. Thailand has next to none. The social security payments barely cover a bottle of shampoo.

yes but keep all the big shopping malls open but everything else closed
