Is it more dangerous than Thailand? Yes, and probably more so than the rest of South East Asia.

I have been to some bad neighborhoods in Europe that are just as bad or worse. Red light district i Rotterdam is one example. Holy ****. there are street gangs there, you think you are in Mogadishu.

I always ask myself is it as dangerous as the places I haunted in the 1980s.

Brixton, White City, Shepherd's Bush, Notting Hill ........... and the answer is always no.

My pal and I were having a competition ........ who can bang the smallest woman.

I was winning with a 38Kg (30 year old), her feet were level with my knees while we were watching a movie in bed.

Then my pal took the lead with a 36Kg night club waitress.

We then saw a lady (mid-20s) who couldn't have weighed more than 34Kg (and the girl I was with said she's available).

At that point I conceded the contest to my pal ................

I've got some amazing memories from Barretto.

Good food, cheap booze, great bars and clubs, amazing beaches, good friendships.

Gone are the days of the dwarf throwing contests also 555

Your friend looks for trouble and finds it.

I never look for trouble and never find it.

Martial arts guys are always aggressive, same as white guys training in Muay Thai. These sort of people are best avoided as they draw trouble like a magnet.

Such a ridiculously uninformed generalization. I have found quite the opposite to be true. Sure, you have some goons who take some Muay Thai classes here, and are itching for a fight. But, most accomplished martial artists tend to be very disciplined, and have far more self control than most of us. And they know they possess the power of life or death, and use that power with restraint.

That is especially true of my friend, who could snuff out the life of the vast majority of men, in a few seconds. And being a renowned profession security expert, combined with being a world class fighter, he has too much to lose, and very little to prove to anyone.

No. I never have. And it is possible he has never been offered a security gig in Nigeria. And he was not referring to thugs, or gun attacks, or kidnapping attempts, as much as random street violence, perpetrated by guys with alot of skill.

You need to understand the threat before the risk, something you obviously dont comprehend.

I have a friend who does private security for a lot of very high net worth individuals, and corporate CEOs, when they travel, and he told me that the only country in the world that he will not take an assignment is the Philippines. When I asked him why he reminded me that he was at the 6th or 7th degree level in six different martial arts, besides the fact that he was 6'5 and about 280 lbs. of muscle. Spent his whole life training. Not the kind of guy you would want to mess with. He told me under normal circumstances he could incapacitate a group of four or five guys, in under a minute. Not in the PI.

He said that in general, the Philippine men had the greatest degree of fighting skills of any group of people in the world, and that if you encountered a single guy, or a group of Philippine guys on the street you just never knew what their level of skill was, and you had to assume that they were expert street fighters. He said many were experts with knives, sticks and improvised weapons. Not the case here.

If you add on top of that, the fact that the country is extremely poor and that there's a fairly high level of desperation, it makes the Philippines a very, very dangerous place. Crime there is very opportunistic. And being a foreigner makes you a potential target. Again, not the case in Thailand.

You really have to know what you're doing, you really have to know where you're going at all times, especially at night, and you always have to have eyes in the back of your head, and constantly looking over your shoulder. Of course, it varies depending on the city, the part of the city, and the region. But it is just one of many reasons I would not want to live there.

I've been told this by a number of friends who live in the Philippines and it's been my observation, the several times that I have visited.

I like the people. The level of english skills and the women seem to be the big draw for most guys. But random guys in the street, can be a hazard, and that is variable I would want to have to deal with, regularly.

Nice story but were you ever attacked there? Were you robbed there? Otherwise, it's just people's perceptions. Before I went the first time I checked the Canadian warnings about foreign travel and they don't recommend visiting Mindanao. I went anyway and my experience was that Mindanao is safer then many parts of Vancouver. Stories are always interesting, but experience is the best.

Thanks for the warning. I know, the truth can be painful, sometimes.

The food in general in Cuba is utterly horrific.

I have to agree with you. I visited a restaurant one night. Ordered chicken soup. It came to me with chicken legs hanging out. Tasted like <deleted> and I was stupid enough to eat it. That night I was vomiting. 2 days out of it or more. But a great holiday overall and stunning cuban girls everywhere. Sometimes lines of them waiting around outside my room

Yeah, I sure had some amazing trips there, back in the day. The Cuban women can be alot of fun, and very passionate.

I have a fun story in relation to that, from one of my trips to Cuba. On the last night of my trip I finally got with this spectacular eighteen-year-old who I had been oogling the entire trip. She literally would not give me the time of day, prior to that. I was at the door talking to the guy that was running this little bar where she was hanging out. I had chatted with him a few times, as my Spanish is pretty good, and he was a cool guy. I could look in the window and see her sitting there and the guy asks me what are you looking at, and I said I have had the hots for that gal, (pointing to her) for the entire two weeks I've been here. He says oh that's Julia, she's a good friend of mine. I said wow and he said do you want to get with her? I said are you kidding me, yes I would love to and he said let me talk to her for a minute, then comes back a few minutes later he said yes she'll get with you but she wants $60. At that time that seem like a lot of money, but it was worth it!

I took her back to this sweet, large apartment I was renting for my two week stay, in the best section of town, and I had the time of my life with this stunning super model type. I used to bring duffel bags full of lingerie, bras and panties, as they were nearly impossible to find there, and costs $40-100 each. My women friends in LA, most of whom are very successful, would donate them to the cause of helping poor Cuban woman, as well as aspirin, vitamins, and other things I would bring to help out on my "charity trips". Talk about a scam. The typical salary at that time was $40 a month. She literally lost her mind, when I showed some to her, and she proceeded to do a super erotic fashion show for me. She stayed all night and she was exquisite. She got some lingerie bonus prizes! It was maybe equivalent to six months salary for her.

I was dating a gal in Los Angeles at the time and I had a date set up for her for the night after I came home. We had dinner at a nice place, it was the third date, we hadn't even kissed yet, and she was kind of hinting that she needed some money for rent. She was pretty, not gorgeous, and was in her late twenties and I was already 50-ish, so there was an age disparity which in America is a big deal. So, the expectation of some sort of sponsorship thing is common in cities like LA, if the guy is alot older, and the woman is young and fine enough. Anyway she kind of hinted at needing assistance and that I would get what I wanted if I was willing to help her out. So I kind of played along with it and at one point I said , so what is the extent of your needs this month, and she said she was about $1,100 short. It was near the end of the month. So I glossed over it, and deftly moved on to the next subject. For the next 15 minutes she was very anxious, she tried to steer the conversation back and finally I looked at her and I said, I'll help you out no problem. And I then I change the conversation again. She was getting very anxious and finally she said okay okay what about that thing we were talking about before, what can you do to help me? I said no problem I'll give you a 60, she said what do you mean 60, 60 what? I said $60. She asked what am I supposed to do with $60. What makes you think that is an appropriate thing to offer?

I said look, all I know is that last night I was in Havana, and I spent all night with a woman ten years younger than you and 30 times more beautiful, and that's what I paid. The look on her face was precious. I asked her, what on earth makes you think you're worth any more than that?

Needless to say it was our last date, but that was worth it, to see the look on her face, it was priceless. And she was long overdue for someone telling her like it is!

Brilliant story. $60 in cuba is huge. I think its 6 times the normal price.

I arrived at a coastal town in the opposite end of the island from havana. I was standing at the beach and a young guy comes up and asks if I want to order some lobster. I said yes. Then he said do I want to order an 18 yo. I couldnt believe it. I went for a swim and walk. come back an hour later and there were 5 girls sitting there waiting with the young guy. Great stuff. Both the lobster and the gals were illegal. Makes them both twice as delicious. It was $10-20 twenty years ago. This was a few years later. And she was worth every penny of that $60. A sublime experience. The lovely and large apartment helped, me agreeing to pay her 6 weeks salary did too, and finally the lingerie, aspirins and vitamins. She left my place fully stocked! And happy. Me too!!!

Yes, but that's in South of the Philippines, similar to the situation in Thailand. No "Falang" territory there.

I am married to a Filipino and I went there in 2014. Before that I went to Thailand about 10 times. For motorcycle riding and jet skiiing and that type of thing, Thailand is cheaper with better quality and more relaxed. I could barely find a decent bike bike to rent. In Pattaya or Phuket, you can find a new looking 600 cc bike in 10 minutes. So that was quite disappointing.

Same with the jet skiis. In Pattaya, you can ride anywhere you want out in the water. Straight off the beach chair and onto a jet ski. A nice jet ski. In the Phillipines, the jet skis are 1990's and you have to get taken to a certain area. Takes the fun right out of it.

We will be visiting Thailand next time after we go to visit.

I spent a couple weeks recently in the Philippines and would definitely agree with the previous post about the media overblowing things. While discussing with locals the issue of safety and drug use I would say it's pretty comparable to any SEA country. Obviously avoid drugs or doing them publicly or obtaining from non trusted sources but I felt very safe during my time. I am also American and would say it would be a mistake to not visit the Philippines .
