It's more a case of racists who don't know what racism is and try to accuse everyone else as if that in some way mitigates their own racism.

There are 3 kinds of stupid - Stupid, stupider and Racist. The third category is usually so stupid they don't know its themselves being racist not others.

I agree with you. I have come across quite a few Thais who stated they didn't like black people as an example. They did  go on to say that they are not racist but just don't like them.  When you explain what racism actually means they either shut up over the childish face thing or look puzzled.

I know we can get this in other countries and cultures but this is a thread about Thai racism/discrimination.

Discussion is more than Thailand to add balance to the Thai bashers assuming local discount only happens here. 180 baht is a fair price, the locals get a big discount, do you have an issue with that?

I never liked paying more than 5000 baht more than my brother in law because I was not Australian, but I never moaned about it on Australian expat forums. Likewise in US forums about paying more than locals at Disneyworld, which was a waste of money, one photo with Goofy was more than 3 times your 180 baht entrance fee.

I think the concept is ugly..... charging more based on skin is not the act of modern civilization. And the scale of the difference is excessive.

If 180 baht is a fair price why do Thai people not pay it? And it isn't locals only is it, it is the whole country, so it is a Nationalism thing.

I avoid places here where this is employed, but do not dispute it happens elsewhere, I don't like it there either. It is one of the unfair practices one comes across here.... they do it behind your back.... they do it for purchases of hardware items if they can get away with it. They do it for food prices in restaurants....

It's not about racism unless you're claiming that "not-Thai" is a race.

I think this thread is largely about the racist amongst those posting on this thread.

Don't know about others, but for the 30 odd years i have been living in this country i have always felt like a second class person and always "a Gust" here and the treatments were in-kind of a second class person...

Strange, I’ve always felt treated like a God here. Everywhere I go, I have women telling me I look like Brad Pitt and trying to sleep with me. The Thais have always treated me like I’m sort of celebrity when I’m not. No money required to be treated well, just good looks. Many wealthy Thai women have offered to pay me to sleep with them. Im married now but it was fun back when I was single. I guess everyone’s experience is different. Definitely have never felt like a second class citizen in Thailand though.

If I had $1 U.S. for every report of an expat going to a Thai hospital trying to get a COVID shot and being told "sorry, cannot, Thais first,"  I'd be a VERY wealthy man!!

B.S. on this minister's public statement. The evidence is overwhelming to the contrary.

Just the other day, the MoPH issued a public report saying only about 3.5% of the estimated foreign nationals population had received any COVID vaccines.. and that compares to more than 15% of the Thai population thus far.

That pretty much looks like discrimination.

Yes, they said foreign nationals will receive COVID vaccinations under the government's program. But they never said exactly WHEN!

Their next BIG LIE will be that we are refusing to be vaccinated!

It's local discount, not charging anyone more. It happens in most Western countries too.

Yes the Thai local discounts. A joke. They are not racist, they are nationalist. Just show your Thai ID card! ????Achieving PR in Thai a pipe dream for most forget citizenship. Not comparable to Thailand.

Just like ripping off Japanese tourists in Hawaii the difference is a Japanese or Thai or any alien living for even study or short term work in Hawaii easily gets a drivers license, state ID card even a student card from Kapiolani college. With that she will immediately have almost every right as kamaaina US citizen. Same with Disneylands and Worlds, ski areas, Nevada casinos, etc. Of course simply apply for Health insurance like anyone else. Same everywhere in US, where it is illegal to discriminate based on nationality.

Then meet a surfer boy get married,  or get a series of work visas. Green card/permanent residence within 2 or 3 years a simple matter of course with marriage. Unless convicted of serious crimes stay forever. (US PR holders are deportable I don't know about Thailand) Citizenship within 7-10 years normal IF she chooses. Every right as a natural born US citizen except to become President of the United States. A choice because unless you are a criminal it gives no benefit other than voting or being a officer in military and then may have dual citizen issues with home nation. Naturalized US citizens only deported in very rare cases/ serious fraud hiding your past as a terrorist or Nazi concentration camp guard.

I have met black people from Caribbean islands who made  point to have told me they did not like black Americans. I don't want to write a long post to define racism but that is just bigotry, not racism. Racism exist in a power structure for that reason it is possible for a Black man in America to be a bigot but it is almost impossible to be a racist. Maybe in a prison controlled by a black gang. The moment he is released his privilege vanishes same as if Oprah walked into a Walmart unrecognized and was tailed by a security guard for no reason.

It is ridiculous for a Thai Minister to lightly make such a statement. Thai practices laws, and structures affect different Nationalities in different ways and the truth is you HAVE money, certain jobs, or status many foreigners here enjoy racism based privilege.

There is almost no way a Thai whether or not they are a bigot can be unfairly harmed by any foreigner in Thailand, unless they fall for an online scam or go looking for drugs on lower Sukhumvit. That is just stupidity.  Those experienced in life under an actual structure of white supremacy such as in the US, or working in the middle east, working on cruise ships etc.,  find solidarity with so-called blacks.

I have a pic of one somewhere I think from Patpong, or Japanese Only (I have been inside those, a joke)

it says something like "No Arab can sit here we don't want you drinking alcohol and accosting women we respect your religion". Totally racist and unacceptable. Japanese are a nationality and Arabs are not a race but the word racism has a very complex interpretation. I cannot give you an authoritative brief definition. One knows it when one sees it.

So I am in Sisaket - in the high risk group - wondering where or even when to get a vaccine. Tried to get a Moderna. Currently I am travelling as little as possible. Shop in the early morning. Contacted the hospital with my medical records. No luck there.

Just wondering with deep sarcasm.

Why is it that racists spend so much time arguing that other things or people are racist. Don't they understand that that is in itself a glaring example of racism?

It's not racist to point out the obvious truth. If you can't handle it, that's on you.

The point being that being racist is not limited to geographic locations or ethnic origin.

Understand?

I retired last year(as a foreigner) aged 55 and got a full pension. I could have got 5k for life but chose the lump sum option as I wanted to buy Bitcoin.

Good on you, after all it is your money. But you were lucky that you were not considered "rich alledee" ????

I know at least 5 foreigners that don't want a vaccine and will refuse it. I don't know ant Thai that thinks this way.

It is the same with wearing masks as Anutin pointed out.

As a foreigner, they should be made leave the country of they don't adhere to the laws.

Foreigners and Thais have different personal values; Americans value there personal freedom and individualism for example, Thais value collectivism. There is no right or wrong.

Has the minister tried  to register as a falang, thai first, thai first, ID card thai first, and he considers this equal and fair.

The system is not racist, but it is ageist.

There is nothing wrong, IMHO, about a country vaccinating its own citizens first. However, Thailand is not doing this, foreigners are getting vaccinated before Thais is some cases.

and quite rightly so if they health issues/over 65 etc, in other words they are high risk. I base my opinion on someone who is married to a Thai, living here permanently and contributes handsomely to the Thai economy.

Just sayin like ????

Yes, I have no issue with my 70-year-old american friend being vaccinated before me, as he lives here permanently, well maybe not as on a yearly extension.

I agree that marriage to a national should give more benefits, but Thailand is unique in this way as  most foreign marriages where I live(Isarn) are marriages of convenience.
