ASEAN admits UK as dialogue partner despite disagreements

Article by Kavi Chongkittavorn

The United Kingdom has been admitted as the 11th full dialogue partner of ASEAN,even though some divergent views have yet to be settled.

Early last year, the UK told the preceding ASEAN chair, Vietnam, that it would like to join the club as a full dialogue partner on a fast track. London has been working hard to reach out to foreign countries to compensate for its withdrawal from the European Union.

The Joint Communique issued at the 54th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting stated that ASEAN agreed to accord the UK the status of new dialogue partner, in view of “its individual relationship with ASEAN.” In addition, ASEAN also values the UK’s past cooperation and engagement with the bloc when it was a member of the European Union.

The UK is thus qualified in accordance with the Guidelines for ASEAN’s External Relations (2014) and the List of Criteria for Dialogue Partnership (2021), according to the communique.

Due to divergent views expressed by the ASEAN members regarding the special admission of the UK, the ASEAN foreign ministers further tasked the ASEAN Secretariat to come up with recommendations on the modalities of engagement including arrangements for coordination.

Some ASEAN members argued that any additional enlargement of dialogue partners must come after the lifting of the current moratorium put in place in 1990. Supporters wanted to take in the UK without any conditions, citing its former membership of EU and close ties and cooperation with ASEAN members.

Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei are members of the Commonwealth, a regional grouping comprising former countries under the British empire. Myanmar forfeited its membership once it gained independence in 1948

Currently, several countries are requesting to be either sectoral or full dialogue partners. ASEAN has different categories of partnerships with foreign countries namely dialogue partners, sectoral dialogue partners and development partners. Pakistan, which was admitted as a sectoral dialogue partner in 1992, has not been promoted.

Despite some disagreements, they agreed that there should not be any delay in admitting the UK as a new dialogue partner because the bloc perceives the UK to be one the world’s great powers which can impact peace and security in the region.

Indeed, the UK aircraft carrier, Queen Elizabeth II, sailed through the South China Sea ahead of the ASEAN annual conference which was considered a show of maritime power.

Each ASEAN member will serve as a country coordinator. For instance, Myanmar is the coordinator of ASEAN-China relations and Thailand is the coordinator of ASEAN-Japan Relations. Further discussion is needed to decide which country will coordinate with the UK.

All politicians prefer symbolism to substance ... Queen Elizabeth sails thru the Sth China Sea (wow!), UK applies for dialogue with ASEAN (that'll make a difference!), UK wants to be a member of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (presumably on the ground that the Falklands aren't that far away) ...

We were already talking to ASEAN while we were in the EU.

What we are doing now is trying to repair the damage caused by leaving.

As for the aircraft carrier. You understand we had to borrow the aircraft on it from the USA right?

Ruling the waves? Waives the rules more like.

Incorrect .

The U.S aircraft used the U.K Aircraft carrier for training purposes so that.............."This week a squadron of Marine F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters wrapped up nearly two months of training aboard the U.K. Royal Navy HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08), paving the way for U.S. and U.K. fighters to operate interchangeably when the British aircraft carrier leaves on its first deployment."

The reason for that is that over the years Supermarkets have been using cheap labour for haulage drivers , their terms (wages) got so bad that many drivers gave up and moved into other jobs and the haulage driving was taken over by cheaper E.U workers .

Now Supermarkets will have to pay a decent /living wage to haulage drivers .

Paying U.K workers a decent wage instead of using cheap E.U labour was one of the ideals of Brexit

lol. Championing the EU's vaccine rollout because 6 out of 27 countries finally got it together, claiming Britain will be told to sit in the corner during ASEAN talks, trying to claim covid related issues are due to Brexit. And that's just on this short thread.

Self flagellation is an unpleasant trait of certain Brits who hate their own kind. You're free to go and live in an EU country if you love it so much. Your countrymen want to stay as part of the UK. Bon voyage. Ciao ????

So the price of goods in the shops will go up in order to pay those extra wages to UK natives. Odd you all failed to mention or address that in your Brexit campaign.

No I was simply correcting your claim that the EU's vaccination program was somehow rubbish.

You honestly believe that the UK will be more important to ASEAN than the EU? Seriously?

Driver shortage is related to Brexit. Ask your mate Mac Mickmanus for details.

When Scotland does go independent then I will be returning to an EU country.

So we showed the Chinese that we still rule the waves by sailing an empty carrier through the south China sea?

Training exercise is just another way of saying borrowed. You think those pilots need training on how to take off and land on a carrier?

It was a two month training exercise for the purpose of the UK and USA airforce being able to operate on each others boats , a joint exercise .

Yes, they would need to practice on a new boat
