90 views and no one knows?.......must admit i have never seen it before.............my gf from Surin recognised it, guessing at 10 baht a bag it must be some type of foragers vegetable.............apparently it can be used in gaeng som

heres a photo may help

Looks like the stem from a water lilly.

My wife calls it "toon", though it might be the similar "bon".

Koon   คูน, ออดิบ, ตูน a type of elephant ear plant

In northern Thailand and Laos, koon is known as ‘toon’. In the south, however, it’s named ‘au dib’. Koon is also known as ‘bac ha’, a Vietnamese name, at Asian supermarkets.

-------------------------------------

Koon is also related to 'bon', a similar edible plant that tastes great, but can cause itchy irritation when eaten.

That was my thinking.................trying to work out the word บรอน ......must be the correct spelling, as she spelt it to me

I can't read Thai, so I'm unable to help.

Could be "bon" - see my edit above.  But I see ก้านคูน and ก้านบอน ... ??? galadium / Colocasia  Some have oxalic acid in them.

From one of the above links.................

At farmers markets, koon is often labeled ‘taro stem’. Koon, though related to taro, is not taro. Koon is also related to 'bon', a similar edible plant that tastes great, but can cause itchy irritation when eaten.

Notice the word bon..............nearly the same sound as บอรน

Thanks for all the help

Taro stalks or taro stems.

I know as my wife cooks them curry-style.

I'm a horticulturist by training.  If I'm going to eat weeds, I like to know what it is.

No need to be snippy.  If you'd spelt the word correctly in the first place it might have helped.  It's บอน.  In English, Elephant ear, Cocoyam, Dasheen, Eddoe, Japanese taro, Taro.  The following site has a few pictures and a list of regional names for it.  (None of them is บรอน.)

Yes Steven very many are. We are stuck in our houses because of what appears to be a total miss management by your hero.

Indeed if my thai gf had given me the correct spelling that is what i would of posted....................she has now been suitably spanked.

Thanks for the link ......................

Get that spelling verified by someone else. Might be missing a tone mark.

I don't know what sound บอรน has; it's not a Thai word or structure.

  • 2 months later...

A picture will get more responses than a single word in Thai, you might want to remember that snippet.
