A latest case of corruption among Thai authorities has come to light though the director of the corrections' department said it is an old case that has already been the subject of an ongoing investigation.

It involves the paying of two million baht to staff at a prison to facilitate an improvement in status of a prisoner.

It was made public after a former convict in a murder case called Jaras instructed human rights lawyer Atchariya Reuangratana to act on his behalf.

Corrections department chief Ayut Sinthaphaphan indicated to Daily News that the case referred to one that began in 2017 and involved two staff.

Both were transferred while a wider investigation took place. There was apparently evidence against one staffer and none against another.

The final report on the matter and its disciplinary implications is expected to be announced this month though criminal proceedings will be up to the RTP said Ayut.

I agree it is not clear. The Thai source was unclear regarding Jaras's involvement.

Isnt this so typical though, something is uncovered then its buried in a comittee or "investigation" for years until its forgotten or pointless due to the passage of yime and redistribution of assets usually.

The whole damn thing is just rotten go the core and needs aggressive surgery to remove these cancers, but that will never happen because too many at the highest level are feeding off it and thus teaching the rising ranks "how its done" .

I have yet to see, in 20 years, the actual consequences of these issues ever be published other than being moved to an empty desk. Yeah that'll teach em ! thats a great deterrent.

When I was in a Thai prison, the trustees acted as the prison guards (allowing the uniformed guards to stay in their air conditioned offices) and were known as the prison ‘police’.  The trustees had a favourable status including better clothing, better food, constant access to the prison shop, less lock up time and many more benefits than the general prison population so had a relatively ‘cushy’ life.  They lorded over the other prisoners even dishing out violence with impunity.

It was well known that all trustees purchased their positions …
