BANGKOK, 5 October 2021 (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health has issued the latest vaccination guideline for adolescents aged 12-18. Boys in this age group will get a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine, as health officials are waiting for more concrete data about possible side effects.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is currently the only COVID-19 vaccine provided to this age group.

In the new guideline, girls will be fully vaccinated with two doses about three weeks apart, while boys will receive only one dose initially, as health authorities need to monitor possible side effects like heart inflammation.

Myocarditis which is an inflammation of the heart muscle, or pericarditis which is the inflammation of the outer lining of the heart, were reported as rare side effects from COVID-19 vaccination using mRNA vaccines, particularly among younger men and teenage boys.

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) Director-General Dr Opas Karnkawinpong said these conditions are more commonly found in teenage boys aged 12-17 years old after receiving their second dose of the mRNA vaccine, generally at the ratio of 6 cases for every 100,000 people.

In Thailand, 4 cases of heart inflammation have already been reported among 130,000 vaccine recipients.

The DDC chief said the conditions are usually mild, with recipients being able to recover on their own. He stressed that the benefits from vaccination still outweigh the risks.

Thailand’s vaccination drive for 12- to 18-year-olds is being organized mainly through schools. Students who are older than 18 years of age, but are active students, will also receive the Pfizer jab, whereas university students who are under 18 years old can ask for their jabs at provincial halls.

Homeschooled students will receive their jabs via provincial administration, who will be arranging vaccination appointments at a later stage. This vaccination campaign also covers students of other nationalities.

Thailand received the first delivery of the government-bought Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty vaccine in late September at 2 million doses. It earlier received 1.5 million doses of this mRNA vaccine donated by the United States.

The delivery of another 1.5 million Pfizer doses is scheduled for Wednesday, to be followed by another 1.5 million doses next week, bringing the total to 5 million doses.

Dr Opas said the rate of vaccination among teachers is between 80% and 90%. The vaccine drive will continue until 100% of teachers are vaccinated.

Despite high vaccination coverage among teachers and the vaccination drive for students, Dr Opas said schools will need to continue observing safety measures in order to prevent new clusters of COVID.

It's totally sureal...

2 doses for girls. 1 dose for boys... Sure...

Thailand has crossed the Rubicon.

Since long time.

And they no doubt will class the boys as fully vaccinated

I think (again) they ordered too few vaccines and the ones ordered are being vacuumed up by the hiso. So this is the TIT style fix....

In the UK both boys and girls 12 - 15 yrs are only getting a single dose of Pfizer. Not saying that's the correct thing to do just a comparison.

Can't see much benefit in vaccinating healthy teenagers unless they are the one in a million who could get seriously ill with covid.

The only other benefit i can see is to stop them spreading the virus to more vunerable people, but hang on a minute, shouldn't those more vunerable people be vaccinated first, and in any case, vaccination doesn't prevent covid or spreading the virus it just limits symptoms.

It's a bit like the engineers song, Round and round went the bloody great wheel.....

I just hope that for the  future sake of the teens of Thailand that this is not some undisclosed "trial" being inflicted on an uninformed sector of the population. Is there some surplus of Pfizer that has not been announced or is  it a quiet experiment?

The vaccination stops people from getting severe symptoms, which results in no hospital time, and kids having the vaccine helps , stop trying to make out the vaccine is bad , people like you are delaying the world to open, just get a jab and be done with it

We keep getting the same lies. The vaccine does NOT just limit symptoms, it reduces both acquisition and transmission of the virus. Furthermore, elderly vaccinated people are less protected than younger vaccinated people so keeping the virus away from them reduces their chances of dying, even if vaccinated.

I think Thailand has made the correct call here. It makes me wonder why the UK isn't giving the 2nd dose to the girls as the risks are small compared to the boys. The 2.5 million 2nd doses for the girls is quite a cost and it would have been easy to have saved that expense. I have a 16 year old daughter so I'm happy that she will have the best protection available at this time. My 11 year 3 month old son is still worrying me though.

The British Medical Journal had a commentary describing the study that called out an increased risk for myocarditis as 'deeply flawed"

Quote

The risk of 12-15 year old healthy boys experiencing cardiac adverse events such as myocarditis after their second dose of the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine is around four times adolescents’ risk of being admitted to hospital as a result of infection with SARS-CoV-2, a preprint study has found.1

However, the study has been widely criticised for mining data from an inappropriate source to deliver an antivaccine message, despite warnings against such data uses.

Covid-19: Study that claimed boys are at increased risk of myocarditis after vaccination is deeply flawed, say critics

BMJ 2021; 374 doi: https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.n2251 (Published 14 September 2021)

https://www.bmj.com/content/374/bmj.n2251

It's worth noting that the paper is in pre-print stage (I think that's being overly generous) and has not passed through the peer review process.  Given the criticism it's already received it might have a difficult time getting published in a respected journal.

To be honest I haven't been following the myocarditis issue too closely.  But if the government is basing its decisions on studies that are not peer reviewed and have been called out for using unsound methods that is especially disturbing.

It makes sense. Their argument is that those claims are based off of data from a public, unvetted source. A source that should only be used to find trends for further analysis and not conclude anything definitive. It contains reports that are “possibly” related to Covid. Furthermore, they say it is another example of antivaxers spinning data.

Let me guess, soon most can't get babies anymore or find out 10 years from now, when it is too late?

Do you have evidence or is this misinformation and baseless speculation?

The benefit is Big Pharma becomes richer.  Who wouldn't force the vaccine if they get millions in kickbacks.
