Poll: More grandparents than parents are bringing up Thai children

I wonder how many of the 'fathers' actually know they are the father of a certain child/children.  Those that do know usually do a runner to avoid their responsibility, they don't want anything to with their child.  It goes far beyond money, they would be tied down which is the one thing they don't want.  Respect to the grandparents who take on this onerous yet vital task.  Also to the parent(s) who go to the big smoke to make some money to send home to help the grandparents raise the child.  Not all parents are tarred with the same brush.

I think the lack of financial help from the father is not unique to Thailand and the whole world. Everywhere parents abandon or neglect their children.

Because of these situations, babies often end up in hospitals with serious illnesses. They need special care and further rehabilitation. But there are also those children whose parents are busy with hard work and cannot give their kids proper attention. So if you are in a similar situation, it is better to ask for help from https://fosterplus.org. This option allows the child to get help and not feel abandoned. What do you think?

In general, the art of parenting seems to be getting lost. Letting grandparents raise the kids is tragic. They are even more lenient than today's parents. It creates a very weak generation.

Lenient was not the word that popped into my mind when I assisted a young girl being beaten by her grandmother with a stick.

A lot ofThai men don't care about their children.

Bum bum and off you go.

The burden is on the young mothers.

In order to support their child/ren, they often most go to bigger cities to earn some money to support child and parents.

No legal requirements for men to support their children.

For this, many thai women are keen to get a farang.

openly racist comment.

Articles title is not correct. It's extended families who are taking care of kids, not just grandparents. That would be siblings of parents, aunties and other relatives. Some would be childless and happy to help. Some would have their own kids but getting another one or two kids to their doesnt burden them. The more kids together the easier to take care of them. Kids will also take care of each other.
In towns it would be neighbours, friends, sharing care of kids by several families.

I think the motive for this research was not about grandparents, because situation is known and stable for always, but about covid influence on kids and families. That is a new factor which changed a lot, have a big impact.
I think covid enhanced family life, with more time spend together. Locked down schools and many workplaces forced a better family life. Also work from home. That allowed for socialising and home schooling, quality time together.

Same goes for rural areas. Young generation was forced to go back to villages so they reunited with their kids abandoned there.
Of course, financial hardship and work desperation are the drawbacks but people have survived.
Covid was a reset for thinking about families as moral support. Possibly had a positive impact on demographic with some more kids being conceived during curfew.
Alcohol prohibition also had a good impact on family life.

That poll was conducted at the end of devastating delta wave, so pollers were under health duress. But from perspective of over 1 year things look not as bad as perceived at time.

This isn't accurate.

Many Thai women don't care for their children either.

Bum bum and then let their grandmother raise them. It's cultural and normal in the lower classes.

They can then go off and make 50k a month doing massage in Phuket or 100k in Japan/Korea and their kids will still be utterly neglected. Cash is the most important thing.

And often after separation, the father is told to go and not show face again. He basically losses access to his kid because her family takes control. But they will then say, "He no good. He ran away." Bull <deleted>.

They don't do amicable break ups here. My EX explained this to me when we broke up and were discussing custody. She described it as Thai culture to become mortal enemies after a break up and never see each other again. Childish, of course.

And not that many are interested in farang, by the way.

The world needs farmers, delivery drivers and shop assistants, more than it needs people with degrees.

A farmer/driver/shop person with a degree won't ever be happy or satisfied with their place in life.

Not to mention the school loan they will be expected to repay.

Largely correct. University used to serve a vital function. These days, that is not necessarily the case. Unless one graduates with a medical degree, medical tech, nursing, an MBA from a top 20 school, or a degree in engineering, the prospects are not what they used to be. And the debt can be outrageous. College seems to be a racket these days. Big business. And who wins in the end? The university.

Vocational school, or specialized training, may have more application, in this world.

So you agree, they prefer a farang due to financial benefits?

No you are missing the point entirely.  They do not "prefer" a farang.  They put up with one in the majority of cases because they have no other options.

Or stated more simply in latin:

Tabula in naufragio

Sexist comment.

Not racist.

It says "Thai men" = not "men" - Why is it that racists spend so much time trying to suggest that something they said isn't racist? It seems they are arguing against something they actually approve of.
