Thai funerals are not necessarily sad affairs and this was proved in the north east of Thailand yesterday.

As a group of "Ramwong" ladies performed a sendoff that they were sure would please their recently departed friend.

Right in front of the crematorium where the body of their friend awaited the fire in her coffin.

Luay Parisoi, 64, had been diagnosed with lung cancer at the start of the year and died last Friday.

A video showed that after the chants by monks, and kind words about the deceased's life a group of eight dancing girls - many a little advanced in age - performed three jaunty numbers.

Back in the day Luay had been a Ramwong dancer and in later years when she became a mum and housewife she attended events in her old costume and then formed a troupe among her many friends in the villages.

So they dressed up in all their gear, put on make-up and sent her off in style.

There was a mixture of joy and sadness at the event but her friends agreed that Luay would be smiling from above and would have enjoyed the send-off, reported Daily News

Rather unusual for a cremation the ladies' performance got ripples of applause from the gathering at Donjik Wanaram Buddhist affairs center in Muang district of Nakhon Phanom.

I have been to a funeral held in the middle of a large luktung concert at Bangkok Wat. Concert stopped at 10 PM for cremation followed by fireworks and the kids name spelt out with them. After that a likay performance, deceased boy 14 killed on a bike, nice but very expensive send off.

There was some "twerking"  in that video  I thought the "democratic soldier" had banned all that ? :w00t:

Well done ladies.

RIP Khun Luay.

Yup. My wife is in a similar troupe performing at weddings , Big C , official functions and religious events. They take it pretty seriously and put in a lot of practice and won the Amper contest last year with 9 competing teams. Sometimes in simple outfits as shown , sometimes in elaborate silk costumes with a lot of bling. They have a great time dressing up and traveling everywhere with the bonus that they get to make a little pocket money which they spend on a slap up meal and beer. Wife is second youngest with oldest being 73.
